Three leading members of the renowned Ensemble 360 plays under the name Leonore Piano Trio. Last September Ensemble 360 thrilled the audience at the Gallery with their music, this year they make a welcome return as a trio rather than a quartet.

The three musicians are acclaimed artists with an international reputation and since last year they have played  all over the world; a series of concerts at the renowned composer Sir William Walton’s villa on the island of Ischia stands out, but so does a three week-tour of New Zealand, where the highlight was a concert in the Auckland Philharmonic Hall.

Benjamin Nabarro plays the violin and has been described by Musical Opinions as “an outstanding artist” and they specially mention “his purity of style, elegance of phrasing and unsurpassed perfection of technique.” Benjamin appears in concerts worldwide and is often a soloist or guest concert master with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, just to mention one. He plays on a violin made by GB Rogeri of 1695, a real treat awaits the audience to hear such a beautiful and rare instrument.

His colleague Gemma Rosefield also plays on a remarkable instrument. Her cello was built by Allessandro Gagliano in 1704 and was once owned by the Prince Regent. Gemma made her concert debut at the tender age of sixteen, when she won the First Prize in the European Music for Youth Competition in Oslo, where she took part in a televised performance with the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since then her career has moved steadily forward and the London Evening Standard refers to Gemma as “a phenomenal talent.”

The third member of the trio is Tim Horton on piano. This is the man who replaced the world famous pianist Alfred Brendel at short notice in two performances of Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. Tim has collaborated with leading chamber musicians and plays regularly with violist Robin Ireland and their two recordings have been rightly acclaimed by music critics as well as the disc buying public.

Last year Gemma told Dulwich OnView that the trio likes to interact with the audience. She said that it relaxes both the artists and the audience and cuts the formality of the occasion. “ People are often afraid at concerts, thinking they must concentrate, but by feeling at ease they can open their ears and hear new things.”

And there will be a very interesting programme to listen to, spanning three centuries. The Leonore Piano Trio has chosen one masterpiece from each period. There will be Haydn’s Piano Trio in C Hob XV 27 which was published in London 1797. This will be followed by Mendelssohn’s much loved Piano trio in D Minor opus 49 written1839 and representing the last century the Trio will play Ravel’s Piano trio in A Minor from 1914.

For the first time this Gallery concert will be organised in association with and sponsored by Kirker Holidays, famous for its Cultural Tours and Music Holidays. A very happy collaboration for the Leonore Piano Trio as well as for the Gallery.
