The word ‘stepmom’ never quite gives you the pleasant image, thanks to many a prevalent stereotype in storybooks and movies. But that notion is fast fading and we’ve reached a time where the word stepmom doesn’t make you cringe any more. What’s more, even in our own industry, we’ve seen many a woman take on the role of a step mother in real life and set all the right examples. This Mother’s Day, we salute the 6 step mothers in Bollywood who prove that the evil stepmom trope is so passé.
Shabana Azmi
Married to Javed Akhtar, she became a step-parent to his children Farhan and Zoya Akhtar. And she’s oh-so supportive of their careers, as they are of her work. While we often see Shabana accompany her husband to Zoya and Farhan’s movie screenings and events, we also saw Farhan walk the ramp for Shabana’s Mijwan show last year.
Helen
Now this story is as filmi as they come. Helen joined Salim Khan’s family as his second wife and the couple adopted Arpita Khan a few years later. And the entire clan, along with Salim’s first wife Salma Khan and her children Salman, Arbaaz, Sohail and Alvira Khan, lives together even today! They’re clicked together at every family do and Helen even did a special dubsmash to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo for Salman. Aww!
Supriya Pathak Kapur
Shahid Kapoor shares a warm and healthy relationship with his step mother Supriya Pathak, who married his father Pankaj Kapur. She was not only actively involved in his wedding, but also shared screen space with him in Pankaj Kapur’s Mausum, even if for a little while. What’s more, Shahid also shares a close bond with his half-siblings, Sanah and Ruhaan Kapur.
Kareena Kapoor Khan
When Bebo married Saif Ali Khan, she also became step-mother to his children Sara and Ibrahim. And she took on this role too with style! Sharing a comfortable equation with both children, she’s also been seen partying with Sara and is more like her friend than anything else. How cool!
Kiran Rao
As Aamir Khan’s second wife, Kiran Rao became stepmom to his children Junaid and Ira Khan, with whom she shares an amicable bond. Add to that, she’s also extremely appreciative of Aamir’s ex wife Reena Dutta and has reportedly complimented her on her parenting skills too!
Soni Razdan
Alia Bhatt’s mother Soni Razdan is also step-mother to Pooja and Rahul Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt’s children from a previous marriage. And apparently, Soni is known to share a pleasant equation with Pooja, which is one of friendship than a mother-daughter bond.
