It’s that time of year again when Salman Khan fans rejoice at the possibility of yet another festive blockbuster from the superstar. Having started something of a trend of releasing films on Eid, Salman has made this festival his trademark. What’s more, he’s had back-to-back releases on the festival since 2009, barring the year 2013. While other celebrities too have followed suit once in a while, not all have been successful at the box-office as he has. As Sultan takes to screens this week, to mark the festive occasion, we take a look at the box-office impact of the Eid releases in the last decade.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 2015

Domestic collections: Rs 320.34 crore

Easily the biggest blockbuster of 2015 and one of the highest grossing films of all time, Bajrangi Bhaijaan stormed the box-office as it took to screens. Starting its first day on a high with Rs 27.25 crore in the kitty, the film went on to be Salman Khan’s biggest hit yet, earning Rs 320.34 crore nationwide. While Prem Ratan Dhan Payo followed suit with a Diwali release, the box-office impact of the film wasn’t nearly as great as that of this Kabir Khan marvel.

Kick – 2014

Domestic collections: Rs 233 crore

Seeing Salman in a negatively shaded role for the first time was a treat for most fans and they made the most of it on Eid. the film became a landmark for Salman’s highest scoring releases till Bajrangi Bhaijaan came along. Moreover, the film made an unprecedented Rs 164 crore in the first week itself.

Chennai Express – 2013

Domestic collections:  Rs 226.70 crore

One of the only years without a Salman Eid release, Shah Rukh Khan delivered a treat at the box-office regardless with Chennai Express. Not only was the film an out-and-out entertainer, but the box-office numbers, a mammoth Rs 226.70 crore in total, reflected the festive fervour that year.

Ek Tha Tiger – 2012

Domestic collections: Rs 198 crore

The highest earning film of 2012, Ek Tha Tiger earned superhit status the minute it clocked Rs 135.05 crore in its first week at the box-office. Appreciated not only for the high octane action sequences but also the music, this was another hit in Salman’s kitty.

Bodyguard – 2011

Domestic collections: Rs 142 crore

Another high scorer for Salman and the biggest hit of 2011, Bodyguard made its buck over a five-day weekend, earning Rs 86 crore. A solo release that week, Salman fans rejoiced and the film almost touched Rs 150 crore with its lifetime collections domestically.

Dabangg – 2010

Domestic collections: Rs 141 crore

One of the two 100-crore hits of 2010 (the other being Golmaal 3), Dabangg was also the highest earning film of that year. Setting the tone for the Salman’s blockbuster standards, this film was a sure-shot knockout.

Wanted – 2009

Domestic collections: Rs 61 crore

The first in a streak of almost 7 back-to-back Eid releases, Wanted banked an impressive Rs 61 crore that year, the third highest box-office collection of the year. Bested only by Love Aaj Kal and 3 Idiots, this film definitely started the trend for Salman fans, who now eagerly look for an Eid release from Bhaijaan himself.

Dil Bole Hadippa – 2009

Domestic collections: Rs 23.30 crore

In a clash with Salman’s Wanted, Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapur’s Dil Bole Hadippa paled in comparison. Earning a meagre Rs 23.30 crore, the film was strictly average at the box-office.

2008

Kidnap

Domestic collections: Rs 20 crore

Drona

Domestic collections: Rs 10 crore

This was a low-scoring Eid for Bollywood as neither of the two clashing films managed to achieve a hit status. While Kidnap still managed to earn an average total of Rs 20 crore, the ambitious Drona turned out to be a loss-making enterprise, earning a poor Rs 10 crore.

2007

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

Domestic collections: Rs 49.7 crore

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

Domestic collections: Rs 9 crore

In yet another Eid clash at the box-office, Bhool Bhulaiyaa got the bigger chunk of the pie with Rs 49.7 crore in earnings. Its competitor, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, didn’t fare as well, earning a below average Rs 9 crore. What’s more, Bhool Bhulaiyaa also made it to the top 10 grossers of the year, making it another hit in Akshay Kumar’s kitty.

2006

Don: The Chase Begins Again

Domestic collections: Rs 51 crore

Jaan-E-Mann – Lets Fall In Love

Domestic collections: Rs 25.5 crore

This was a clash of the titans, if we ever saw one, as Shah Rukh and Salman went head-to-head at the box-office with Don and Jaan-E-Mann. One of the most memorable Diwali/Eid clashes of the decade, we saw Shah Rukh steal Salman’s thunder, as Don walked away with exactly double of Jaan-E-Mann’s box-office collections. Sigh.

2005

Garam Masala

Domestic collections: Rs 27 crore

Kyon Ki…

Domestic collections: Rs 13.75 crore

One of Salman Khan’s first Eid releases, and the year that seemed to start a trend, 2005 saw a clash between Akshay and Salman as Garam Masala and Kyon Ki… took the screens together. While the comic caper Garam Masala packed a punch at the box-office and became one of the highest earners of the year, the romantic drama Kyon Ki… couldn’t make more than an average total of Rs 13.75 crore. The comedy Shaadi No 1 also released on the same day but couldn’t make much in this three-way clash.
