H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has recently opened the Projects Management Forum held by the RTA in collaboration with the Projects Management Institute, (PMI), USA with the aim of uplifting the profile of Projects Management, sharing knowledge in projects management, enhancing the skills and abilities of projects management, beefing up the number of projects managers holding professional certification, and establishing effective communication with project managers.
The opening session of the Forum was attended by H.E. Mark Langeli, President and CEO of PMI, and a host of RTA top executives.
Al Tayer explained that the RTA had completed several giant and complex projects highlighted by the Dubai Metro project; which is considered the longest driverless metro project in the world, in addition to a whole host of mega multi-tier interchanges. “The RTA has reached the maturity stage as far as projects management is concerned in terms of leadership skills, resetting of priorities, and working out the required budgets to assist the smooth handling of director jobs, besides demonstrating ability to manage relations with partners and stakeholders and achieving excellence in this field, thanks to RTA’s efficiency, sound knowledge and high-class administrative practices,” added Al Tayer.
The Projects Management Forum included a plethora of activities such as diffusing knowledge, conducting training sessions and workshops, presenting & discussing book abstracts, holding benchmarking visits, in addition to lending technical support to project management, besides holding an online forum to exchange knowledge, offer guidance & counseling to new project managers and establish interaction channels among forum members.
It is noteworthy that the RTA has recently been inducted as a member in of the PMI Global Executive Council, based in Pennsylvania, USA; and has such become the first government entity in the MENA Region accorded this membership.
The PMI Global Executive Council includes around 80 major companies and institutions worldwide such as Citibank, Boeing, General Electric, IBM, Microsoft, and NASA. These major companies and institutions cover multiple and vital fields in projects management, including construction, energy, information technology, financial institutions, aviation, and defense. The Council primarily aims to share ideas and knowledge to develop the project management profession.
The RTA, represented by the Corporate Project Management Office Team, has delivered in-depth distinctive researches including papers on “Establishing Projects Management Office in Major Pubic Institutions” delivered to a conference held in Singapore; “Projects Management Maturity Steps in Public Institutions” delivered in Australia; “Role of Leadership in Managing Major Projects,” presented in the United States, and the “Corporate Project Management,” presented in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The RTA’s efforts were furthered by Mark Perry, the famous author, who allocated a whole chapter in a book released this year in which he reviewed RTA’s experience in the establishing and managing an office specialized in corporate project management together with challenges faced in this regard. RTA’s membership in the PMI Global Executive Council did has not come out of nothing, given the presence of world-class members operating in fields representing vital pillars in the modern age.
