Smart is taking another stab at the EV market with its Fortwo family.

For now, Mercedes-Benz only has figures for European-spec Fortwo Electric Drive models. Nonetheless, the numbers are pretty decent – on a single charge, the Fortwo Electric Drive coupe can travel up to 159 kilometres, while the cabrio does about 154 based on European testing standards.

Both the Fortwo Electric Drive coupe and cabrio are powered by an electric motor, developing 80 horsepower and 118 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s hooked up to a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be filled up in about 2.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet and a quick-charge feature. You could still use a 110-volt outlet, but then you’d be looking at 22 hours for a full recharge.

While North American availability and specs haven’t been announced yet, the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive coupe is set to cross the Atlantic next spring, followed by the cabrio in the summer.
