One of the last real body-on-frame SUVs, the Ford Expedition gets to last another generation without melting into a droopy CUV like the Explorer or Land Rover Discovery. The big news is that the hauler loses 136 kilograms thanks to a lighter aluminum body – the first of its kind on an SUV. Motivation comes from a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic; no V8 option is mentioned.
Outwardly, the previously rugged-looking face of the Expedition adopts a wall of chrome. Hopefully this design detail is only reserved for the luxury models and not all Expeditions. The new Ford also gets a 360-degree parking camera and many other digital driving assists.
The best part about a real SUV is that you can tow truck-sized loads. Ford states that the new model has the “best towing capacity of any full-size SUV” but neglects to throw out an actual number. To help with trailering duties, the SUV receives a tow/haul mode on the shifter that allows for more engine braking and a cool backup feature that helps novice drivers back up a trailer into difficult spots, like the F-150 pickup has now.
The new Expedition will be formally unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show next week.
