Today, Governor Rick Scott presented the “Great Floridian” award to Dr. Pedro José “Joe” Greer, Jr., alongside Florida International University President Mark Rosenberg and Founding Dean of FIU’s College of Medicine Dr. John Rock
Governor Scott said, “I am honored to present Dr. Greer with the Great Floridian Award. Dr. Greer has worked selflessly his entire life to improve the quality of life for families throughout Florida. His determination deserves the respect and admiration of everyone in the Sunshine state. Today, we see homelessness in Florida down by 17.5 percent and that is because of the work of leaders like Dr. Greer who help Florida families get back on their feet.”
Dr. Greer started his medical career at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He then went on to establish himself at the Camillus Health Concern clinic to provide care and social services to the homeless and poor in Miami-Dade County. In July 2007, Dr. Greer joined the newly established Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs. Two years later, in 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Dr. Pedro José “Joe” Greer, Jr. said, “I am honored to be considered a Great Floridian and humbled to be amongst such an accomplished group. Only Florida could create FIU, an institution truly focused on educating, researching and applying the real solutions for today and tomorrow. It is a privilege to work at a great university of a great state.”
“We at FIU are honored to be able to call Joe Greer a colleague and a friend, but more importantly, our students are extremely fortunate to have someone of Joe’s professional and personal caliber as a professor and a mentor,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg.
The “Great Floridian” designation is given in recognition of the outstanding achievements of men and women who have made significant contributions to the progress and welfare of Florida.
Only 81 individuals since 1981 have been given this distinct honor, and those honorees represent former governors, civil rights activists, military heroes, Florida Supreme Court Justices and others.
