During this week in June 1987, the BBC banned airplay of George Michael’s salacious single “I Want Your Sex,” a tribute to monogamy in the age of AIDS that came across more as an open invitation to copulation. And now that summer is approaching, we couldn’t think of a better way to heat things up than to put together a list of the best songs to get things sizzling in the bedroom. And while some of our personal faves—including the Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?”, the Rollling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” Mad Cobra’s “Flex,” the Staple Singers’ “Lets Do it Again” and Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”—all received serious consideration, in the end we chose the ones guaranteed to keep the bed posts rockin’. Here, DoYouRemember presents its musical dirty dozen.
12. Madonna: “Justify My Love” (1990)
Madge has always pushed the sexual envelope, but when she dropped this song along with an extremely provocative and highly sexual video that featured nudity and was originally banned by MTV, she proved she knew how to give fans exactly what they wanted.
11. The Isley Brothers: “Between the Sheets” (1983)
This track showcases the smooth, soothing vocals of Ronald Isley and his brothers and provides the perfect aphrodisiac for lovers looking to make the magic happen.
10. R. Kelly: “Bump n’ Grind” (1993)
Before he was plagued by scandals, drama and setbacks, R. Kelly ruled the world of R&B thanks to the success of his megapopular 12 Play CD, which featured this instant lovemaking classic.
9. Marvin Gaye: “Let’s Get It On” (1973)
Marvin Gaye’s soulful tune is about as on the nose as it gets when it comes to sexually suggestive material. Ironically, the original version, penned in 1958 by Ed Townsend, was about his desire to get on with his life after a lengthy battle with alcohol abuse.
8. Bob Dylan: “Lay Lady Lay” (1969)
Dylan wasn’t known for his ability to pen a sex song, and although he insisted the tune isn’t about fornication, the censors didn’t agree. It was banned by most radio stations.
7. Frankie Goes to Hollywood: “Relax” (1983)
It’s pretty clear that the message Frankie Goes to Hollywood is pushing here is all about encouraging a sexual partner’s delay in climaxing for as long as they can to increase their pleasure.
6. Color Me Badd: “I Wanna Sex You Up” (1991)
CMB scored a big-time hit when they released this song, which is full of blunt proclamations and a sample of Betty Wright’s sexually charged “Tonight Is the Night.”
5. Ginuwine: “Pony” (1996)
If you were over age 40 when the Bachelor, a.k.a. Ginuwine, released this song you probably still think the pony he’s referring to was kept in a barn on a farm in the Midwest.
4. George Michael: “I Want Your Sex” (1987)
Following his decision to depart Wham! and leave his partner, Andrew Ridgeley, in his rearview mirror, Michael dropped this track aimed at convincing women to enjoy monogamous sex.
3. H-Town: “Knockin’ Da Boots” (1993)
A group from Houston known collectively as H-Town excited the loins of many a college coed when they released a song combining a popular slang term for sex with a slow, deliberate tune that truly helped set the mood.
2. Labelle: “Lady Marmalade” (1974)
When a woman asks a man if he will have sex with her tonight, the answer is pretty much a given, but when the three women of ’70s pop group Labelle went on the record and asked that question in French, they had everybody getting freaky.
1. Prince: “Gett Off” (1991)
Prince & The New Power Generation – Get off sur wat.tv
Prince’s bold, provocative number about a night of unrivalled sexual passion complete with 23 positions and all sorts of lovemaking innuendos is intense and super freaky, even by Prince’s standards.
