The baseball team beat Oral Roberts in 12 innings to win their 36th game this year. Both the men's and women's tennis teams are heading back to the NCAA Tournament. Gretchen Aucoin wins the Big 12 pitcher of the week for the 2nd straight week and Zach Smith is ready to contribute.
Red Raiders Win in 12: The Texas Tech baseball team beat Oral Roberts last night, 4-1 (recap, box score and LAJ). Corey Taylor got the start, went 3.2 innings, giving up 5 hits and no runs, walking none and striking out five with Cameron Smith giving up the only run for Texas Tech in his 1.2 innings and Dalton Brown going 4.0 innings, giving up just 2 hits, no runs, 4 walks adn 2 strikeouts. Dominic Moreno picked up the win, his 4th of the year, going 2.2 innings, giving up 3 hits, no runs and 4 strikeouts. The offense was stagnant until the 12th inning, when Tyler Neslony tripled, Gutierrez walked adn Davis scored on a wild pitch, Adam Kirsch doubling, scoring Gutierrez. That's all Texas Tech would need to come away with the win.#
Back to the NCAA's: Congrats to Todd Petty and the Lady Raider tennis team for receiving a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play Ole Miss at UCLA on Friday (via Texas Tech). And further congratulations to Tim Siegel and the Red Raider tennis team as they'll be playing Cal in College Station on Saturday (via Texas Tech).
Aucoin Repeats Pitcher of the Week: Congrats to sophomore pitcher Gretchen Aucoin for being named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row (via Texas Tech).
Smith Ready to Contribute: Texas Tech men's basketball signee Zach Smith is ready to contribute (via DT). Smith's high school head coach Jeff Clarkson had this to say about Smith's game:
"He definitely needs to polish up his offensive skills — his ball handling and just his scoring ability," Clarkson said. "Learning to be a little bit more aggressive off the dribble and learn how to get his shot a little bit quicker and a little bit easier. He’s got the tools; he’s just got to get a little more confidence. He came to practice every day and I never had to really ask him to pick it up. He was always ready to go and got after it and competed. He’s real well-liked among his teammates and he’s a great kid."
And head coach Tubby Smith said that Smith is the most athletic player of the signees:
"He will be the most athletic player we signed because he can run, he can jump out the gym and he’s got great touch," Tubby Smith said. "He can knock down the three, the open shot. I think when we bring them (recruits) in alongside guys that we have in the program, I think we’re going to be pretty good."
