Things to do in Paphos

The Tombs of the Kings
One of the most impressive Cyprus historical sites is the tombs of the kings. Here you can find the fourth century tombs of rich citizens, important officials and members of the Pafian aristocracy. Although there is no actual royalty buried here, the site owes its name to the extravagance and size of the tombs, some of which resemble the dwellings of the living.

The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis about two kilometres from Paphos harbour. It can be reached on foot following the coastal path mentioned below. Otherwise, the second best way to reach it is by car.

Paphos Aphrodite Water park
This is the largest water park in the Paphos area. It offers a lazy river, high-speed water slides for those seeking an aquatic thrill, a children’s playground and more. Entrance is 30 EUR for adults and 17 EUR for children.

The 611 bus will drop you off right in front of the water park. It runs from the harbour all the way to the park (Geroskipou Beach stop). Otherwise, the park is easily reachable by car and on foot as it is located along the coastal path.

Ancient Kourion

Agios Lazaros
This church was built in the 9th century by Emperor Leo VI and was restored in the 17th century. The baroque iconostasis is one of the most unique aspects of the church.

However, archaeologists have found remains surrounding it dating back to the 1st century B.C.

Famagusta

Cyprus Currency
The main currency in Cyprus is now the Euro. The currency of Cyprus had been switched from the Cypriot pound to the Euro in 2008.
But what currency do you use in northern Cyprus, you might ask?
Although the northern, Turkish-controlled part of Cyprus still uses the Turkish lira, a switch-over to the Euro is currently in the process and the Euro is widely accepted. Major foreign currencies such as the US dollar, the British pound and the Euro are also accepted at several hotels, restaurants and shops throughout the island.
Currency exchanges can be made at all of the major banks throughout Cyprus.
As of April 6th 2015, the Bank of Cyprus currency restrictions were lifted as banks continue to recover from the financial crisis. travellers should always check for the most up to date information regarding any currency withdrawal or Cyprus money transfer restrictions.
Safety in Cyprus
Is Cyprus safe to travel to? Because of current events as well as the island’s location off the southern coast of Turkey and the western coast of Syria, many travellers have been asking themselves this question. At the beginning of the year, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office published a graphic detailing which countries were at the highest risk of terrorist attacks. According to this document, Cyprus is believed to have a relatively low threat level. On the official UK government website, it states that Cyprus has a “general threat of terrorism,” specifying that there is considered to be a heightened global threat of terrorism at this time and that individuals should remain generally cautious.
Cyprus Flights
Cyprus’ main airport is Larnaca International Airport (LCA). This airport is located on the outskirts of Larnaca, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus. Flights to Cyprus from London just as flights to Cyprus from Manchester take about 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Paphos International Airport is the country’s second largest airport, located just outside of the city of Paphos, the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, on the south-western coast. It mainly services low-cost carriers such as Ryan Air. Flights to Paphos are therefore a great travel option for those on a budget.
Bus transfers are available from both airports into the main city and beyond.
Cyprus visa requirements
EU citizens do not need a visa for Cyprus, however, they must carry a valid travel document such as a passport or national identity card.
Residents of non-EU countries who hold Schengen visas and have already entered the Schengen area may enter Cyprus for tourism purposes without an additional visa. Those wishing to enter Cyprus for purposes other than tourism (work, study, etc.) and for a period longer than 90 days must check with their national authority before travelling to find out the specific procedure for obtaining a visa.
In the case that you will need to come to Cyprus often for business trips or other purposes, it is also possible to obtain a multiple-entry visa which would be valid for several visits and for the duration of one year. The total duration of visits should not exceed 3 months within any 6 month period.
Driving in Cyprus
Public transportation in Cyprus is scarce so renting a car is one of the best ways to get around the island. Remember that if you are planning to travel in the mountains or on rough terrain, it is always wise to rent a vehicle with four-wheel drive.
Also, if you are from a country that drives on the right, remember that you may have to get used to driving on the left. The road system on the island is the same as in the UK.
Cyprus weather
The Cyprus climate is subtropical. Due to its location in the north-eastern Mediterranean, winters in Cyprus are mild with bouts of rain and the summers are hot and dry. It only snows in the Troodos Mountains, a popular skiing destination in the central part of the country.
The Cyprus weather in January is quite cold as January and February are the coldest months in of the year. Average temperatures along the coastal areas range from 7-18 degrees Celsius. Expect snow in the mountains and temperatures no higher than 6 degrees Celsius. January is the island’s second rainiest month.
The Cyprus weather in February is generally similar to that of January. There tends to be less rain in Cyprus in February, however, than during the other winter months. There may be a couple of rare warm days in February, a sign that spring is approaching.
March is the beginning of spring in Cyprus. So for the Cyprus weather in March you can say, that days are longer, precipitation is minimal and the sun is shining. Average temperatures on the plains and coastal areas range from 7-20 degrees Celsius.
The weather in Cyprus in April is generally sunny. It may get cooler early in the morning and late at night but average temperatures are warm during the day, a sign that summer is approaching. On average, the maximum temperature around coastal areas is 21-23 degrees Celsius.
The weather in Cyprus in May is quite warm, as May is the start of summer on the island. Average maximum temperatures on the coastal areas as well as inland areas range from 24-30 degrees Celsius. The beginning of the month may feel a bit windy, especially along the coast. When the end of the month approaches, it starts to feel like summer.
The weather in Cyprus in June is generally warm. Temperatures are high but not as high as in July and August. By noon, temperatures on the coastal and inland areas may climb up to a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius. In the beginning of the month, evenings can still be a bit windy.
July is one of the hottest months in Cyprus. Temperatures are especially high between noon and 4 pm. Average maximum temperatures along the coast are in the low thirties and climb up to the high thirties for inland areas. Rain is very, very rare in July.
August is also one of the hottest months in Cyprus. Average temperatures are about the same as in July with the exception that the nights are a bit warmer. Rain in August is very rare.
The weather in Cyprus in September is sunny and warm with minimal precipitation. Average temperatures are similar to that of June, with highs of 34 degrees.
The weather in Cyprus in October is generally still warm and sunny, despite a few rainy days. Temperatures drop between 4 and 5 degrees with respect to September. Average highs inland and in coastal areas are in the high twenties.
The Cyprus weather in November may be considered rainy as November is the 3rd rainiest month of the year. Average highs inland and on coastal areas drop to the low twenties.
The Cyprus weather in December is quite rainy as December is the rainiest month of the year. It is also the warmest of the winter months, averaging highs of 17-19 degrees Celsius inland and on the coast.
