Professional soccer player Carl McHugh, who hails from Donegal, is at the centre of a war of words following a move from English League side Plymouth Argyle to Scottish Premiership outfit Motherwell.

The 23-year old holding midfield player, a real fan-favourite at Home Park, played a pivotal role in getting the Pilgrims to the Play-off Final at Wembley last season, but has opted to make the switch across the border after his contract expired recently. Motherwell FC confirmed.

But in a statement on Tuesday, Plymouth Argyle had said: "We understand that Motherwell Football Club will today announce that they have signed Carl McHugh despite the fact that contract terms for him to extend his contract with Plymouth Argyle were agreed in writing between Argyle's CEO Martyn Starnes, Carl, and Carl's agent Sky Andrew last Friday."

McHugh, though, is now very much a Motherwell player as he confirmed in this video.

McHugh says that the move is a great opportunity.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 International, who can also play at centre back or fullback, started his career at Reading before spending time on loan at Dundalk before eventually moving to Bradford City in 2012. He played almost fifty times in Claret and Amber before joining Argyle in 2014.

He went on to play just short of 100 games and has excelled, particularly under the guidance of former Motherwell man Derek Adams, who has deployed him as anchor man in the middle of the park.

Motherwell beat off strong competition from several English clubs to land McHugh, who passed his medical and signed a two-year contract on Tuesday.
