Donegal is the second cheapest county in the Republic when it comes to going to go to the dentist - that's according to a new survey.

The Irish Daily Mail conducted a survey of over 120 dental clinics which revealed that the average consultation price is €38.50, but some patients are being charged as much as €95 for a first-time visit.

Laois emerged as the cheapest with an average charge of €31 with Donegal next at €33.

But the cheapest cost per visit - at the Watters and Leneghan Dental Surgery in Co. Monaghan - was just €20.

The clinic charges €20 for a general examination, €10 for an X-ray, €30 for cleaning, and €60, on average, for a filling.

Commenting on the survey, the Chief Executive of the Irish Dental Association, Fintan Hourihan, said fees are set by dentists independently and reflect the costs which must be met in running dental clinics without any state support.

The survey also revealed that the cheapest county for an examination is Monaghan, with an average price of €27, while Galway is the dearest at €48. The average price across the country is €38.50.
