Cannes has become synonymous with glamor, luxury and power. Since 2013, Swiss jeweler Chopard has been utilizing the event as a launching pad for a journey toward more responsible luxury. That year, it premiered the ethically-sourced Green Carpet Collection. At this year’s Cannes, Chopard released Palme Vert, a fair-mined gold jewelry line that is another step . Inspired by the Palme d’Or, Cannes’ highest accolade which has been crafted by Chopard since 1998, Palme Vert features earrings, a pendant, a bracelet and a ring.

The Fairmined label ensures the gold’s ethical history.

Working in conjunction with Eco-Age and creative director Livia Firth, Chopard changed its sourcing methods and has gathered the 18-carat yellow gold that comprises Palme Vert from artisanal and small-scale miners certified under the Fairmined standard created by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM). In addition to supporting small scale-mining, Fairmined also ensures that no child labor was used to gather the gold and that the metals aren’t linked to conflict situations and were mined safely with limited chemicals that can endanger human  health and water supplies. This also shifts the market for communities as Chopard works directly with the mines as opposed to sourcing gold from banks like UBS. Therefore, miners and their communities can negotiate their own deals when selling their gold.
