The steady stream of athletes who are making their way to London for the start of the 2012 Olympic games may have their hearts set on a gold medal, but the orphan dog who jogged alongside a sports star on day 66 of the Olympic torch relay hopes that his moment of Olympic glory wins him the heart of a pet parent.

On July 23rd the flame which symbolizes the spirit of international competition helped to ignite a spark of interest in the option of adoption during a visit to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, which presented a Doggy Honor Guard of 50 Fidos as British footballer Michael Owen and Rory, an approximately four-year-old Staffie, embarked on their historic leg of the journey.

Michael Owen, a father to five dogs– including three Staffordshire Bull Terriers– said: “I’m a huge fan of Staffies so was thrilled to meet Rory and he seemed to really enjoy helping me carry the torch. The atmosphere was brilliant and the dogs behaved so well.”

Rory, who had already been at the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for 104 days when he took part in the history-making event, is one of 166 Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Staffie mixes who are currently residing at the organization’s London center and branches in Old Windsor and Brands Hatch. Battersea’s Head of Animal Welfare Laura Jenkins, who chose Rory to represent the  charity on the big day, stated: We knew Rory was the dog for this important role. He is a super boy who loves being in the heart of the action and we knew he’d love to help Michael carry the torch. He is a fabulous dog and everyone was so impressed with him, as he was incredibly calm walking past the cheering crowds and photographers. Rory would suit an active home as he has lots of energy and he will be an amazing addition to his new family.”

“We think he’s still here simply because he’s been overlooked by potential owners, but now we’re hoping someone will see a photo or clip of Rory and realise what a wonderful boy he is. We have put a poster outside his kennel showing photos from the day, so hope he will catch someone’s eye and be on his way to a new home soon.”
