Well, gentlemen…it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. As 2013 comes to a close, it’s time to look back on the last 365 days and honor the best dressed men of the year. This year’s list includes actors, athletes, tailors, musicians, models, and a couple of men who earned their place just for being some of the coolest cats out there. Our nominations for the most stylish men of 2013 are:
Best Dressed Man #1 – Patrick Grant
Patrick Grant has come a long way from his unglamorous first job in an Edinburgh timber yard. He single-handedly put Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons back on the map after becoming creative director in 2005, and the company has gone on to dress the likes of Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, Mumford & Sons, and the Duke of Edinburgh. In 2013 Grant was made an Honorary Professor in Business at Glasgow Caledonian University and hit the small screen as a judge on the BBC television series The Great British Sewing Bee.
Best Dressed Man #2 – Tom Hiddleston
Suddenly it seems you can’t go anywhere without hearing about this charming Westminster-born chap. Tom Hiddleston – or just ‘Hiddles’ to his dedicated throngs of teenage fans – exploded this year after starring as comic book character Loki in a triple dose of Marvel Studios films. When not wearing his supervillain cape, Hiddleston puts his style down to an Armani leather jacket and a three-piece suit specially made for him by Giorgio himself. Luckily for us, Hiddleston has plenty on his plate for 2014, which means we have many more dashing red carpet appearances to look forward to.
Best Dressed Man #3 – David Beckham
Yes, we’re putting Becks back on the list for 2013. And really, who could blame us? He continues to be one of the best dressed in the game, year after year after year. The former English footballer went through some major changes this year, including playing the final game of his storied 20-year career in May and teaming up with the Las Vegas Sands Corp. to help with the development of hotels in Singapore and Macau, but one thing hasn’t changed: he’s looked incredible doing it all.
Best Dressed Man #4 – Adam Gallagher
“No bad days” proclaims Adam Gallagher’s Twitter. For anyone else, we’d say it’s an exaggeration. For Gallagher, it just might be true. It seems like the menswear blogger never has an off-day. At just 22, Gallagher has taken over the online social sphere with his styling tips, trend forecasts, and fashion inspiration. Gallagher is everywhere – from Twitter, to Tumblr, to Facebook, to Instagram, to YouTube, to Pinterest, to his own personal website. We can’t wait to see what he’s going to come up with in 2014.
Best Dressed Man #5 – David Gandy aka Mr. Consistent
Though he may be best known for his famous face (and body), David Gandy is a surprisingly well-rounded man. In addition to being one of the most sought-after models on the planet, Gandy has spoken at the Oxford University Union, released a mobile app, participated in a discussion panel at the 2013 Vogue Festival, written as a contributing columnist for The Daily Telegraph’s “Telegraph Man” lifestyle section, starred in commercials and fashion films, and was crowned one of the “Sexiest Men of 2013″ by Glamour readers.
Best Dressed Man #6 – Eddie Redmayne
It’s been a good year for the English upper class. Both Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne, the actor, singer and model who has earned the next spot on our list, attended Eton and Cambridge before becoming internationally recognized actors and style stars. Redmayne has modelled for Burberry (once with model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne) and was featured on Vanity Fair’s annual International Best Dressed List. He always impresses with his classically British take on men’s style, though he calls himself “quite ignorant about fashion” and “colourblind.”
Best Dressed Man #7 – Jamie Campbell Bower
Jamie Campbell Bower is one of those guys that makes you glow with admiration and seethe with jealousy at the same time. He’s a successful actor (with roles in major series like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and The Twilight Saga), and lead singer of the band The Darling Buds, and a former model with Select Model Management in London. He also manages to look equally as good in hipster, grunge-y duds as his does dressed up in suits for the red carpet. Some guys get all the luck.
Best Dressed Man #8 – Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams had an incredible year. He was featured on Daft Punk’s smash-hit fourth studio album Random Access Memories on two of the album’s best tracks, “Get Lucky” and “Lose Yourself to Dance.” He produced Miley Cyrus’ headline-grabbing new album, Bangerz, and appeared in one of the year’s biggest songs – “Blurred Lines” – alongside Robin Thicke and T.I. He also released the world’s first 24-hour music video and was recently nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year. And did we mention how dope he looked doing all of it?
Best Dressed Man #9 – Lapo Elkann
Lapo Elkann may not be a particularly original choice for a best dressed list, but some things are tradition for a reason. The New York-born Italian entrepreneur, former Fiat marketing manager, and current Ferrari consultant in charge of the exclusive Ferrari Tailor Made program knows how to wear clothes. This year he collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld on eyewear for his Italia Independent brand and listed the company on the Milan Stock Exchange. The funds will be used to expand sales of his eyewear stock in Europe and Switzerland.
Best Dressed Man #10 – Nathan Stewart-Jarrett
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s star may still be on the rise, but we’re already huge fans of his sense of style. The English actor found early success as one of the stars of E4′s BAFTA-winning drama, about a group of delinquents who acquire superpowers during a storm, Misfits. His success on screen is well deserved, but we think where he really stands out is his approach to fashion. Mr Porter agrees – this year he was featured in the website’s “This Week I’m Wearing” feature, dispensing advice on what to wear and his favourite London hotspots.
Best Dressed Man #11 – Lino Ieluzzi aka Mr. Pitti
Lino Ieluzzi’s iconic Italian style has made him a darling of street style photographers and bloggers everywhere. You’ll find his photo plastered all over The Sartorialist, where he can be seen rocking his signature double-breasted blazers and monk strap shoes. What makes the owner of Milan’s beloved Al Bazar boutique so special is that he isn’t a model, actor, or socialite dressed by a suite of stylists…his style is all his own, and it’s earned him the nickname “The mayor of Pitti” from American GQ.
Best Dressed Man #12 – Justin Theroux
These days Justin Theroux gets a lot of publicity for being Jennifer Aniston’s arm candy, but that’s far from the reason he’s earned the final spot on our list. Not only has he found success as an actor, director, and screenwriter, Theroux has also been impressing with his badass biker style. Few men can make the bad boy look look this good. Sure, he knows how to bring the A-list outfits out for major events, but where he really shines is his rebellious, frequently black and often in leather, street style.
