There is often a massive disconnect from what is seen on catwalks compared to what guys can wear on the streets. More commonly menswear designers produce their wares catered to that small market of excessively wealthy twenty year old waifs, cashing in on their parents money. It is therefore great to see that there are some great, new and established brands catering to the needs of everyday men whilst having enough style to look current and cool. These are our five favourite brands that represent the modern gent. Closing the gap between designer fashion and street style.

Minimalist #1 – Kris Van Assche
This Belgian designer has reshaped the designer menswear scene, taking it away from conceptual art pieces to completely wearable if somewhat exclusive street wear. Known for his aversion to using colours and taking that same aesthetic to Dior Homme, he also designs some of the most kick-ass sneakers around. (WWW)

Minimalist #2 – Neil Barrett
Neil Barrett has established himself as the King of uber-stylish and futuristic sportswear. His collections are put together with prime examples of what most active men can function in and are usually inspired by different sporting disciplines. Casual and comfortable enough to be worn every day, yet sharp and sophisticated enough for those special fashionable occasions. (WWW)

Minimalist #3 – Alexander Wang
Most fashion forward women have known the virtues of this young American designer for a couple of years. Now their male counterparts have access to Wang’s cool interpretations of everyday menswear. His edgy street style helps to make designer fashion accessible to any discerning man looking for that cool and casual balance.  (WWW)

Minimalist #4 – Jil Sander
One of the original menswear minimalists, Jil sander isn’t afraid of using bold colours and balances this with her razor sharp minimalism. Her design aesthetic is sculptural and she pairs this with exceptionally well-made clothes that look great now and will continue to look great and current in the future.  (WWW)

Minimalist #5 – Christophe Lemaire
A relatively new kid on the block, Christophe Lemaire is in very limited distribution at the moment but is definitely worth a look. His style blends classic menswear pieces and earthy colours with a warm modern silhouette. His look books are chock full of individualistic designs that are suited to fit real men. (WWW)
