After two+ years of cleaning and water changes i have noticed a reduction in the substrate in the area not covered with rock.

With my plants growing good and the guppies happy a teardown of the tank is not an option i will consider.

So what to do?

Bags of mineralized soil.

Have used this method with vary good results with Cryptocoryne and Vallisneria planting directly in the bags.

First thing was to boil the soil in a pot on the stove to kill off any bugs (the soil has been sitting outside exposed to the elements in a tub for 3+- years) and strand through a colander then added unscented bleach to kill off anything that survived and boiled again.

Spread out on cookie sheet and cut to size let sun dry for 2 or 50 days (don’t leave in the rain) finish in a 350f oven until good and dry or the old lady notices you are making mud brownies...adddin.jpg

After the mud dries place the bricks in pantyhose tie off the ends to make a form fitting bag.

At this point you can sew a plant onto the bag or lay it on the existing substrate.
Onto the substrate it goes. Being a dry brick in a bag it stays where you put it nicely and does not murky up the water.

Adding rocks will hide the bags. Clean the rocks good!!!
