Our resident blogger Steve Ziagos started to design and build a DIY chicken coop last August. After many months of squeezing this build in after work hours (and having a baby in between!), it is finally done and ready to show off. Isn’t this hen house just a beauty?

Our chicken coop design includes plenty of space in the run for our chickens to scratch. As we noted before, you want to build your chicken coop to accommodate a minimum of three square feet per chicken. Steve made sure to elevate the nesting area so that the flock stays dry during rainy weather. A ramp was added for easy access between the run and the hutch with the nesting boxes. Steve built the ramp using some plywood and cross members, but you can build a ramp in a variety of ways.

Steve started the build by creating the frame for the chicken coop run, then the hutch and finally adding the door to the entire hen house. He used Simpson Strong-Tie® RTC22Z connectors and RTA2Z connectors to build the frame. He also added metal latches to ensure that natural predators can’t get to the chickens, and chicken wire so the chickens have a safe outdoor space to scratch and forage in.

We are working on creating DIY chicken coop plans for this project. Is this a project you are planning to build? Let us know in the comments below.
