The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is a nonprofit organization that has provided food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina for more than 30 years. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 900 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through warehouses in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines), and Wilmington. In fiscal year 2011-2012, the Food Bank distributed nearly 45 million pounds of food and non-food essentials through these agencies. Sadly, hunger remains a serious problem in central and eastern North Carolina. In these counties, more than 560,000 struggle each day to provide enough food for their families. www.foodbankcenc.org.

Job Title:                                            Outreach Coordinator

Basic function:

The Outreach Coordinator will work with leaders of partner agencies within a designated territory of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s service area. These partner agencies are community organizations, with 501(c) 3 status, that provide services to individuals,  families and groups who have been identified as at risk of hunger. The Outreach Coordinator along with the partner agency will facilitate the safety and integrity of local food distribution.  In addition, at the request of the partner agencies, they will work to leverage community relationships of the Food Bank and of the partner agency network to collectively generate more food, more money, and a stronger voice on behalf of underserved people.

The Outreach Coordinator ensures compliance with all Local and Federal Government, Feeding America and Food Bank regulatory guidelines.  The Outreach Coordinator will also support the implementation and use of technology to enhance departmental objectives.

Responsibilities:

Assist, organize and develop community organizations in under-resourced communities; maintain effective lines of communication between partner agencies and the Food Bank and among partner agencies themselves; help link partner agencies with their own local resources both public and private to assist partner agencies in accomplishing their mission.

Participation in and implementation of agency recruitment plans by active outreach and recruitment in identified areas; guiding potential partner agencies through the agency application process; recommends termination and suspension of partner agencies as appropriate.

Conduct site monitoring visits of partner agencies to ensure safe food storage and handling and ensure the practice of good stewardship of Food Bank product and appropriate record keeping; maintain updated reports of agency visits.

Encourages the provision of technical assistance needed by partner agencies.

Create and support local food distribution systems in assigned areas; work with the Food Bank staff to support such systems.

Be knowledgeable of the population and needs of assigned service area; coordinate state, regional and local resources as requested, appropriate and available to meet those needs as defined in the Food Bank’s mission.

Implement departmental work plans.

Assist in the development of local/regional Hunger Council.  Serve as the primary manager of local Hunger Council.

Identify the need for and support the implementation of Food Bank programs such as Kids Cafe, Weekend Power Pack, the Summer Meals Program and other future programs, recruiting non-traditional partners as required.

Support efforts to expand participation in nutrition programs such as Food & Nutrition Services (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), the School Breakfast Program, WIC, etc.

Assist the Development Department in fundraising and public relations when appropriate.

Actively participate in team processes to create a high functioning support system for partner agencies and a high functioning Department.

Perform other duties requested as appropriate to the position

Supervision exercised: volunteers.

Qualifications: Be able to demonstrate initiative and strong time-management skills and perform with little supervision. The successful candidate must have outstanding people skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and experience in building work teams. In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office and related programs is a requirement. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people and have a commitment to social justice. Excellent driving record as extensive travel throughout Food Bank’s 34 county service area is required. An ability to speak Spanish preferred as is experience with direct client services or a third party, direct service provider.
