Improving lives and transforming health care

UC Davis School of Medicine, UC Davis Medical Center and the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing occupy a beautiful 140-acre campus in central Sacramento, a city of more than 450,000 and capital of one of America’s largest, most diverse and most influential states. The campus is minutes from California’s State Capitol and a half hour from the university’s Davis campus, in the heart of a metro area that exceeds 2 million residents.

The health system serves as a key referral center for severe, complex conditions across a fast-growing service area that includes 33 counties and 6 million residents in Northern California and the state’s Central Valley. It is home to inland Northern California’s only Level I trauma center, the region’s full-service, nationally ranked children’s hospital and some 700 specialists trained in more than 150 medical fields. The burn treatment center is the largest in Northern California. Formerly called the UC Davis Regional Burn Center, the new center reflects the name of the Firefighters Burn Institute, which raised $2 million through the “Fill the Boot” and other fundraising efforts to make this expanded new burn center at UC Davis Medical Center a reality.

Beyond California, the health system plays a leading role in clinical breakthroughs, research discoveries and policy changes that help resolve local and global health problems and attract nationwide and worldwide attention.

A healthier world through bold innovation

The health system is expanding in both size and stature, with square footage on the Sacramento campus increasing nearly threefold since 1990 to coincide with our growing national reputation:

U.S. News and World Report continually ranks UC Davis Medical Center and UC Davis School of Medicine among America’s top 50 hospitals and medical schools.

The medical center is also Sacramento’s top hospital in U.S. News rankings, and consumers consistently name it the area’s most-preferred hospital for overall quality and image.

UC Davis School of Medicine research funding has more than quadrupled in recent years, and the school achieved top-40 U.S. status for National Institutes of Health funding.

A new surgery and emergency services pavilion completed in 2010 makes the medical center one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the country. Recent additions also include a new telehealth center and expansions of the pediatric intensive care unit and cancer center.

UC Davis Cancer Center is one of just 41 U.S. centers to earn “comprehensive” status from the National Cancer Institute – the world’s most prestigious honor in oncology.

The internationally renowned UC Davis MIND Institute neurodevelopmental research center is a leader or key partner in several of the nation’s largest, most comprehensive and top-ranked autism studies.

The university opened a $62 million Institute for Regenerative Cures in 2010 and has nearly 150 scientists working on stem cell-related research projects.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing was launched through the nation’s largest grant for nursing education, a $100 million commitment from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Sacramento’s Mediterranean climate helps it continually rank in the top ten sunniest cities in the U.S.,  and outdoors enthusiasts find it ideal for year-round recreation at nearby rivers, mountains and parks such as the 30-mile American River Parkway greenbelt and bike trail.  Fishing, boating and rafting are popular on the 1000 miles of waterways around Sacramento and the Delta.

The area’s rich diversity also feeds a lively cultural scene to please any palate. Sacramento is home to an annual jazz festival, the California State Fair, professional sports franchises, wineries and monthly art walks.

The region offers one of the most affordable housing markets in the state, and a variety of reasonably-priced housing options are available in neighborhoods within easy reach by foot, bicycle or public transportation.
