The new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH) opened in Spring 2015. As a private non-profit, the safety-net hospital delivers high quality, collaborative care to South Los Angeles and surrounding communities in partnership with the County of Los Angeles, University of California and other community providers. The Board of Directors of Martin Luther King, Jr. – Los Angeles Healthcare Corporation (MLK-LA), which governs and operates the new community hospital, is committed to establishing a national model that focuses on patient-centered care.

Now open, Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital is licensed for 131 beds and provides general acute care. It features an emergency department, a critical care unit, labor and delivery capabilities and include radiology and other ancillary services. The new hospital offers a level of service that ensures a high quality, high tech and high touch health care experience for patients and their families regardless of citizenship status or ability to pay. Care is organized through a state-of-the-art, safe and secure electronic health record. In addition, MLKCH serves as a resource by supporting a coordinated and integrated approach to community wellness.

The new facility is a private, non-profit hospital governed by the MLKLA Board of Directors. The independent, eight-member hospital board has authority over, and accountability for the new hospital’s startup and ongoing operations. Dr. Elaine Batchlor serves as the Chief Executive Officer. As part of the coordinating agreement between the County of Los Angeles and the University of California, University of California Los Angeles will play a leading role in developing and maintaining medical care quality standards and graduate medical education.
