One of the highlights of this past summer was when Wine Enthusiast hosted the second-annual Southwest Wines of France Gourmet French Fries Competition at Eventi Hotel in New York City. Hundreds of attendees tasted over 50 richly varied wines from Southwest France served with french fry-based dishes from some of New York’s top chefs.

The gourmet-inspired fries featured ingredients like duck cracklings, black garlic, lime, chili sambal and smoked brisket. Each dish was paired with a dry white, rosé, fruity red,  Malbec and Full Body Red. I loved the rosemary french fries paired with sparkling wine.

Chef Greg Rubin of steakhouse American Cut won the “People’s Choice” wine-and-fry pairing with the restaurant’s signature fries flavored with dry-aged beef fat and a secret sauce.

I am all about Rose for summer and celebratory events, so my favorite was the Domaine de Pellhaut 2015, a blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat along with Syrah, Malbec and Merlot. It has red berries is lightly tart with a smooth texture.

Then there’s my other go-to : the Malbec. To be exact it was the Chateau Lagrezette 2012. It’s described as “a big wine in all senses, perfumed, tannic with truffle and black fruits alongside a dense, extracted character.” For me, it was lightly dry and smooth to the taste.
