Carrie Fisher has passed away at the age of 60. She was hospitalized last week after a massive heart attack on a plane from London to Los Angeles, which she ultimately succumbed to. Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, released a statement to People through their family spokesman today:

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning."

"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

Fisher's presence in Rogue One, the latest installment in the Star Wars series, has been credited with its rising success beyond opening weekend.

Needless to say, the millions of people whose lives her work has touched went into mourning once the news broke. Fans, coworkers, friends, and many others took to Twitter to mourn the loss of a person whose presence always lit up the room they were in.

So glad I was able to see a youthful @carrieffisher in #RogueOne before she passed. Thank you for giving us a new hope❤ #RIP

#CarrieFisher is gone and the world feels immediately dimmed. Like Bowie, she surprised us with late revelations then left us too soon

Peace in the heavens #CarrieFisher "Nothing’s ever really over. Just over there.”

Carrie Fisher. You taught me that being a princess doesn't mean you need to be saved. My heart is broken. #CarrieFisher #RIP

Farewell Carrie Fisher, the writer, actress, icon and wit. So very sad.

So rare for a woman in Hollywood to get to be an icon at different ages. Bereft we will not get to witness grand dame-era Carrie Fisher.
