Since 2014, Kesha Rose Sebert, better known as simply Kesha, has been in an ongoing legal battle with her record producer, Dr. Luke. Her initial lawsuit alleged a myriad of abuses both physical and emotional in nature: sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, and emotional distress among other things.
Last month, a Manhattan Supreme Court Justice denied Kesha’s request to end her contractual obligations with Sony Music and her producer Dr. Luke, effectively forcing her to continue working with her alleged rapist.
In a statement for The New York Times, Sony’s lawyers claim they have “made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement, or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha.”
Outraged fans and celebrities alike immediately took to social media tagging their feelings and conversations about the ruling with #FreeKesha.
Under the leadership of one superfan, Michael Eisele, an 18-year old man who also runs the Twitter account @KeshaTODAY, a protest was staged at Sony’s NYC headquarters calling for the record company to release Kesha from her contract and Dr. Luke’s control.
Now, nearly three weeks after the ruling, another protest is set to take place tomorrow in order to deliver over 400,000 signatures from petitions on multiple websites. Organizers state they will keep the pressure on Sony until Kesha is released from her contract and not forced to work with Dr. Luke.
An exclusive article published Wednesday night by Hollywood news site The Wrap, claims Sony is actually considering dropping Dr. Luke and his label Kemosabe from their roster amid the media frenzy and legal firestorm. Although a spokesperson for Dr. Luke says the claims are not true and that Dr. Luke “has an excellent relationship with Sony,” Friday’s protest may influence their decision one way or another.
