This is my first blog for Discover Denton, so I’ll go ahead and introduce myself. My name is Lauren Frock and I’m a public relations student at the University of North Texas. This is my last semester, and although I’m glad the finish line is in sight, I’m also sad that wherever I may end up after graduation might not be the town I’ve called home for the past four years. It’s bittersweet, really. When I found out that Denton was selected as the best college town by The Official Best Of, I wasn’t surprised. There are so many wonderful people, places and things in this city, not just for college students, but for anyone. In fact, during my college years I’ve met people from all over the world who have come to Denton for a variety of reasons. Here are a few reasons that make me proud to be a Dentonite:
The coffee shops: Juggling my schoolwork, internships and involvement on campus is no walk in the park. I love what I do, but if it wasn’t for the coffee, I’m not sure I could manage my weekly routine. Luckily, Denton has dozens of unique coffee shops. Zera Coffee Co., Jupiter House and Seven Mile Coffee have all been faithful friends of mine through endless essays, final exams and job applications.
The music scene: When I came to Denton, I was a double major in public relations and music. I knew UNT was a good music school, but it didn’t really sink in until I started hearing concerts and live music around town. Denton is the birthplace of many bands that are well-known in the south, such as Seryn, grammy-winning Snarky Puppy and the One O’Clock Lab Band. It’s not uncommon to go out for frozen yogurt or dinner and receive an unexpected serenade by a jazz group or singer-songwriter. There are always new things to hear in Denton.
The creativity: There are so many cute places around town that are known for radiating their own artful flair. The DIME Store and Shop the Barn are two of my favorites because of their quaint vibe and DIY look. Denton is a perfect place for creative minds and I’ve become more creative just by being around so many artistic people.
The community: Every college town is weird, but Denton is 
certainly one of a kind when it comes to quirks. I love seeing Frenchy’s orange vans around town, attending festivals, such as the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, and people watching. I don’t know why beards are such a thing here, but I’ve come to terms with it and even smile when I see someone walking around with a “Denton beard.” Denton has many close-knit communities and I’ve been lucky to find my niche.
I don’t know where life will take me after graduation, but I’m lucky to have lived in Denton and I know it will always have a place in my heart.
