The month of ghosts and goblins and ghouls has descended on Illinois. And what better way to celebrate October than by going somewhere scary for fun? Illinois has a plethora of sites that register high electromagnetic field ratings (which some say may indicate the presence of spirits), and visiting many of them can provide a tour of the state through its creepy places.

Hauntedplaces.org has compiled a list of the most haunted places in Illinois. We’ve listed 50 of them here.

50. St. Turibius Church



5646 S Karlov Ave., Chicago, IL 60629

EMF rating: 73.7

At this old Roman Catholic church, the ghost of a priest named Father Joe Lechert lingers. It is said that after a church reorganization he was let go, and as a result, he died of a broken heart. Parishioners and altar boys say they have seen his ghostly figure and smelled his cigarette smoke.

49. Aux Sable Cemetery

Brown Road, Minooka, IL

EMF rating: 75.0

Aux Sable Cemetery is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a mischievous young girl who has been known to play pranks, such as lowering electrical car windows when the key is not even in the ignition. The site is also said to be a portal from a ghostly dimension.

48. 206 N. Broadway (Scutt Mansion)

206 N. Broadway St., Joliet, IL

EMF rating: 75.0

Built in 1882, the Victorian house at 206 N. Broadway St. was originally a private residence, but was a school and a boardinghouse for women until the 1970s when it again became a private home. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a 19-year-old who was shot and killed at 2:30 a.m. during a party here. It was then purchased by Seth Magosky, a history buff and John Wilkes Booth impersonator who intended to turn the house into a museum, but he died suddenly in 2007.

47. Graceland Cemetery



4001 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL

The spirit of Inez Clark lingers in this old cemetery. She was almost 7 years old when she was fatally struck by lightning at a picnic. There is a life-size statue of her on her gravesite, enclosed in glass. It is said that on rainy nights the statue disappears, and the apparition of a little girl can be seen walking around the cemetery.

46. Lincoln Theater

103 E. Main St., Belleville, IL 62220

EMF rating: 75.0

Lincoln Theatre is believed to be haunted by a prankster ghost. An apparition of a ghostly child has run up and down the stairs, a woman has appeared in the balcony, and tricks are played in the projection booth. Reports say there are seven ghosts who call this theater home.

45. Eldred House

Greene County

EMF rating: 75.0

The 23-room James J. Eldred House was completed in 1861, and was the setting for some sad events. All three Eldred daughters died of tuberculosis here: Alma, 4, in 1861; Alice, 17, in 1870; and Eva, 17, in 1876. A traveling salesman is said to have passed away here as well, and was buried behind the house. The hauntings are believed to stem from the home’s tragic past; the house has been featured on local and national ghost programs, including BIO Channel’s My Ghost Story.

44. Tinker Swiss Cottage

411 Kent St., Tockford, IL 61102

EMF rating: 75.0

Tinker Swiss Cottage is said to be haunted. Witnesses and paranormalists have heard humming and other children’s voices, believed to be because the site used to be a home for terminally ill children. The spirits of the Tinker family are believed to linger in the place as well. Tinker Swiss Cottage has been featured on TV’s Ghost Hunters.

43. Anderson Cemetery/Graveyard X

Off Co. Rd 930 N., East of Clarksdale, IL

EMF rating: 75.0

According to tales told about this cemetery, there is a secret passage that opens up at night, when trees part and a path appears to an ancient graveyard. It’s said to be protected by a phantom wolf who chases trespassers. (The cemetery is not to be confused with another Anderson Cemetery near Palmer, IL.)

42. Dana-Thomas House

301 E Lawrence Ave., Springfield, IL 62703

EMF rating: 75.0

Witnesses who visit or work at the historic house have reported humming voices, chairs being thrown down the stairs, curtains that move by themselves, and an apparition of a woman in black. The woman is believed to be the home’s original owner, Susan Lawrence Dana, who is rumored to have held seances here in the early 1900s. The hauntings are said to happen most frequently on particular days, such as Dana’s birthday, the day her mother died, or the days of the three funerals that were held in the house.

41. Ninth Street Pub

253 9th St., LaSalle, IL 61301

According to local tales, the Ninth Street Pub’s ghost is Mrs. Sonnenburg, an elderly woman who lived adjacent to the pub and often complained about its noise. After her death, the owner of the pub purchased her home and made it into a pub addition. A staff member who was much too young to remember Mrs. Sonnenburg got a fright when he met with her ghost. He walked into the pub area that used to be Mrs. Sonnenburg’s house and heard an old woman’s voice say “What in the hell are you doing here?” No one was visible.

40. St. Rita of Cascia

6243 S Fairfield Ave., Chicago, IL 60629

This site is known for a harrowing experience said to have happened on All Souls Day (November 2) in the 1960s. Reports say a small gathering of parishioners witnessed the organ begin to play by itself as 6 robed monks, 3 in red and 3 in white, advanced toward the churchgoers. When they tried to flee the church, they found they were locked in. In about two minutes the organ music and visions faded, and to end the incident, a disembodied voice was heard to say “Pray for us.”

39. Sheraton Gateway Suites

6501 Mannheim Rd., Rosemont, IL 60018

EMF rating: 76.9

There have been several suicides committed by jumping from this 11-story hotel, and a few drug overdose deaths. Perhaps this is the reason guests have seen apparitions in their rooms and have experienced very odd things. One guest came out of the shower to find her clothes strewn about the room. One ghost, wearing a suit, is said to peer over the top floor balcony on the hotel’s east side. He is said to have jumped from there in 2001. Strange noises such as voices and typing have been heard with no logical source.

38. The Leland Tower

7 S. Stolp Ave., Aurora, IL 60505

EMF rating: 77.8

This 21-story building, the tallest in Aurora, has been the means for several jumping suicides. Evidence that the building is haunted includes reports of bad odors and moaning sounds that come from the elevators.

37. Firehouse on North Walker Avenue

433 North Walker Ave., Chicago, IL

EMF rating: 77.8

According to reports, a ghost who is thankful to the firefighters patrols the firehouse, protecting it. Witnesses say they have heard footsteps and seen the firepole covers being opened and closed when everyone is asleep. The firehouse doors also have been known to open themselves almost instantly after the fire bell rings, even though no one has reached them yet to open them.

36. Desoto House Hotel

230 S. Main Street, Galena, IL

EMF rating: 80.0

The 1855 DeSoto House Hotel boasts such esteemed former guests as Abraham Lincoln and William Jennings Bryan. It was also the presidential campaign headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant, among others. Although the identity of the ghosts here is unknown, many folks have reported phantom cigar smoke, voices in the halls, and apparitions of people in period dress who seem to walk, or float, through walls.

35. Woodstock Opera House

121 E Van Buren St., Woodstock, IL 60098

Interestingly enough, reports say that during any performence here, a certain seat in the balcony (DD113) is always left empty for a resident ghost named Elvira. Her spring-loaded chair has been seen folded down when she is attending a performance. She is said to be very beautiful with long blonde hair and a gauzy gown. She has been seen in the hallways and looking out the upper windows. She also is said to sometimes inhabit the bodies of young actresses and move props and scenery, and if anyone botches a line, she can be heard sighing.

34. Country House

241 55th St., Clarendon Hills, IL 60514

The haunting here, which has been profiled on many TV shows and newspaper articles, is a young woman who appeared to have committed suicide by running her car into a tree. Her ghostly figure has been seen walking through the dining room, beckoning customers from an upstairs window and even blocking the ladies’ restroom. Paranormal activity reported here also includes the sounds of a crying baby and footsteps, moving objects, the scent of flowers, and the playing of the jukebox in the overnight hours.

33. Blood’s Point Cemetery

4470 Bloods Point Rd., Flora, IL

EMF rating: 80.0

Blood’s Point Cemetery, named after the area’s first white settle, Arthur Blood, is said to be a hot spot for the eerie, such as orbs, a vanishing barn, phantom vehicles and a ghost dog that sports glowing red eyes. To add to the spookiness, the nearby railroad bridge was said to be the setting for a school bus accident as well as several hangings. Electrical anomalies and ghostly children’s laughter have been reported here.

32. Robinson Woods

East River Road and Lawrence Avenue, Chicago, IL

EMF rating: 80.0

The hauntings here can not only be seen and heard, but also smelled. Folks say they have seen shadows, red or white orbs, and an ectoplasm mist that has been caught on camera. Strange sounds and scents of violet and lavender have been witnessed as well; reports say the activity seems to come from the left side of the Robinson Family Monument.

31. House of Blues

329 N Dearborn St., Chicago, IL 60654

EMF rating: 80.0

Reports say the site is haunted by the ghost of a little girl who died of an illness. Witnesses have seen and heard her, and in one instance she was found playing with a living boy’s toys. She asked the boy to play with her, but when he screamed, she disappeared.

30. The Harrison Street Inn

204 E. Harrison St., Sullivan, Illinois

Eyewitnesses report apparitions, footsteps, diesmbodied voices, showers and toilets that work by themselves, and many other strange phenomena at this historic inn.

29. Original Springs Mineral Spa and Hotel

506 Hanover St., Okawville, IL 62271

EMF rating: 80.0

This historic hotel is said to have a great many haunts in residence. Included are a man named Meier, who died in an explosion in the 1880s, and J.W. Schreiner, an owner during the 1890s. At least 7 other spirits of folks who have perished during this hotel’s long history are said to reside here. Witnesses have noted mists and apparitions, felt an eerie presence, and heard unexplained footsteps and noises in the hallways. They’ve also reported distant music and doors that open and close by themselves. The second floor of the older wing is said to be one of the most haunted areas in the building, and keep an eye out for a ghostly Lady in White wearing early 1900s garb and a large hat. She is seen in many places around the establishment.

28. Ruebel Hotel

217 E Main St., Grafton, IL 62037

EMF rating: 80.0

When this 1884 hotel opened, rooms cost $1 a day. Although they cost a bit more now, they may come with a friendly haunt: A little girl named Abigail is said to reside here. Her apparition has been seen in the upstairs hallway, and reports say she has talked with many of the hotel’s guests and staff. Her identity is unknown by the owners.

27. Pemberton Hall–Eastern Illinois University

Lincoln Avenue and 4th Street, Charleston, Illinois

The ghost of Mary Hawkins, a former dorm mother, is said to be the head haunt here.

26. Hotel Baker

100 W Main St., St Charles, IL 60174

At this splendid historic hotel, originally built in 1928, an apparent suicide is often given as the reason for some strange phenomena. Moaning sounds come from the sixth floor storage area, which used to be used as housing for employees. Folks say in the 1970s, a hotel chambermaid who was left at the altar committed suicide by drowning herself in nearby Fox River.

25. Showmen’s Rest

7818 W Cermak Rd., Proviso, IL

EMF rating: 80.0

Showmen’s Rest is a section of Woodlawn Cemetery where remains from a 1918 circus-train wreck were buried in a mass grave. Between 60 and 110 employees were killed when another train conductor fell asleep, causing his train to strike the circus train. Many of the victims’ names were not known, so some of the markers say things like “unidentified male” or “Baldy” or “4 Horse Driver.” Today, the section is still used for burials of circus showmen. The cemetery is rumored to be haunted. Locals say the sound of phantom elephants can be heard at night.

24. Willowbrook Ballroom

8900 S Archer Ave., Willow Springs, IL 60480

EMF rating: 80.0

The 1921 Willowbrook Ballroom, formerly called the Oh Henry Ballroom, is a dance venue and banquet facility and is believed to be the last place famed Chicago hitchhiker ghost Resurrection Mary danced before she died. Her ghost is said to appear here and sometimes dance with ballroom patrons.

Another interesting note: Ozzie Nelson played here with his orchestra in the 1930s. Count Basie, and many other Big Band orchestra greats, played here in the 1940s, and other big names such as Chubby Checker, Otis Day and the Knights and The Village People graved the stage in their heyday.

23. Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood Cemetery, Decatur, IL

EMF rating: 81.8

This large and very actively haunted cemetery is known for the ghostly weeping Greenwood Bride, and it’s also home to many Confederate soldiers’ spirits. The soldiers were prisoners in the Civil War, and died of yellow fever only to be cast into unmarked graves. The soldiers have been known to confront cemetery visitors. There are other spirits here too; ghost lights have been seen along the cemetery’s southern border.

22. Benedictine University

5700 College Rd., Lisle, IL 60532

EMF rating: 82.1

This university has more than its share of haunts, including a little boy ghost in a blue t-shirt and shorts who wanders around campus, and disappears. Reports say Benedictine Hall was closed because it was so haunted. Its 4th floor was said to be haunted by a clergyman, and in the art wing, some witnesses have heard voices. Rumor has it that an exorcism was performed on the 5th floor after a student became possessed when he and a group of friends used a Ouija board in the cemetery. Jaeger Hall is reported to be haunted by children; some residents have heard their stereos turn on in the middle of the night. In Neuzil Hall, a little boy and girl ghost were captured on film, visible after the photographs were developed. In Ondrak Hall, one room is said to be closed because it was haunted. Also, TVs have been reported to change volume for no apparent reason.

21. Resurrection Mary

Archer and Terrace Drive, Justice, IL

Resurrection Mary, according to popular local legend, was a pretty young girl who was killed in a hit-and-run accident while walking along Archer Avenue. She had just left the Oh Henry Ballroom after a fight with her boyfriend. The driver left Mary to die. Her grief-stricken parents buried her in the Resurrection Cemetery in her pretty dress and dancing shoes, in which her ghost appears in most reports. Her ghost has been seen by many people since the 1930s. She may appear as a hitchhiker and ask to be driven along Archer Road, but she disappears from the vehicle near the cemetery. She may appear standing in the street in front of the cemetery, and after what the driver thinks is a near miss, he gets out to find no one is there. Researchers believe she may be Anna “Marija” Norkus, who was found to have died in a 1927 car accident after leaving Oh Henry Ballroom.

20. St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church

1220 S 60th Ct., Cicero, IL 60804

This is the home of Our Lady of Cicero, a weeping Virgin Mary icon panel. In 1994, during Holy Week, the painting began weeping oil. It was examined by eight orthodox bishops; all determined the tears to be genuine. The Virgin Mary still continues to weep.

19. Lincoln Square Theater

141 N. Main St., Decatur, IL 62523

This historic 1916 theater building was built atop the fire-ravaged Priest Hotel that once stood here. It is said that the ghosts of the fire victims still linger in the theater. Red, a former theater worker, is a friendly ghost here. Witnesses have heard his whispers, seen his shadowy form, and caught glimpses of him walking about the stage area. A female ghost has been reported here as well. The place has been featured on the TV show Most Terrifying Places in America.

18. Massock Mausoleum

Peru Princeton Road and County Road 3450 E., Spring Valley, IL

EMF rating: 83.3

The Massock Mausoleum stands in a small graveyard called the Lithuanian Liberty Cemetery, and it’s the stuff of legends. Locals tell of a Hatchet Man, a scary ghost who guards the cemetery, and the mausoleum door is said to remain warm and has been sealed closed since the 1960s when vandals stole a skull from it. In Rosemary Ellen Guiley’s The Complete Vampire Companion, she tells about a pale, thin apparition seen here at night. According to the book, after hearing about the sightings, a reporter poured holy water into the mausoleum’s vent, and consequently heard an eerie groaning sound come from the crypt. The area is reported to be closely patrolled by police.

17. Three Mile House

Near 6587 Miller Dr., Edwardsville, IL

EMF rating: 83.3

At this site once stood an inn that was haunted by ghosts of various children and adults, including slaves. The old inn may once have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. It is said that during 1970s renovations, underground tunnels and a skeleton were found. Phenomena that then began include moving furniture, flickers and orbs of light, water taps turning on and off, the piano playing by itself, shadowy figures, napkins that folded and unfolded by themselves, and much more. The ringleader of the ghost, as determined by a seance, was Tom, an escaped slave who had accidentally killed a woman, and for that was brutally murdered. Tom was a religious man, tales say, and his spirit was not at peace. Later, psychics stepped in and calmed the spirits, but the owners were by then tired of running the inn. The place changed hands a few times until it burned down in 1985.

16. Krome Family Cemetery

Near 3138 Old Keebler Rd., Collinsville, IL

EMF rating: 83.3

A small family cemetery is now hidden amongst the trees just off Old Keebler Road. It is all that remains of the Krome family mansion, which burned down long ago and was for decades considered to be haunted by the locals. Some enterprising explorers found leg shackles in the concrete walls of the ruined basement, leading to speculation that the house was once used as a holding pen for slaves about to be sold on the open market. Rumors began almost immediately about ghostly apparitions of slaves being seen walking at night from the ruins of the mansion down to the family cemetery.

All that remains now are the Krome family plots (Charles W., Anna, Charlotte and Charles M. Krome, and a few broken and illegible stones).

15. George Stickney House

1600-1916 Cherry Valley Rd., Bull Valley, IL 60050

EMF rating: 83.3

Because of George Stickney’s belief in spiritualism, he designed his house with no 90-degree angles inside so that no spirits would be caught in the corners. The Stickneys had 10 children, but only 3 lived to adulthood, and they are said to have regularly conducted seances on the 2nd floor to speak to their children. Currently the building houses the local police department, and many spooky events occur here. Tenants after the Stickneys, and later, police officers, have noted apparitions, moving objects, electrical phenomena, doors opening by themselves, and more. The Holcombville Cemetery where the Stickney children are buried lies nearby, and they are said to haunt the entire neigborhood along with the spirit of a passenger killed in the crash of American Airlines Flight 191.

14. Red Lion Pub

2446 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL

EMF rating: 85.7

Seven distinct ghosts are said to haunt the place, including a scruffy cowboy, a mentally challenged woman who wears too much lavender perfume, and two men who died in a fight. As well as seeing their apparitions, regulars at the pub have heard footsteps and voices, and objects crashing, among other pranks. The phenomena are said to occur when the pub is not very crowded, such as late evenings or Sundays.

13. Mineral Springs Hotel

301 East Broadway, Alton, IL 62002

EMF rating: 85.7

Several spirits are said to live at this historic hotel, now open for haunted tours. Among the ghosts are The Jasmine Lady, identified by the whiff of her floral perfume; George, who may have been drowned in the hotel swimming pool around the 1920s; The Drunken Ghost, the artist responsible for the mural in the Crystal Room bar (and died before finishing it); and Cassandra, a little girl who drowned in the pool and likes to play marbles.

12. Peoria State Hospital

Off Constitution Drive, Bartonville, Illinois

EMF rating: 86.2

This abandoned mental hospital, now in the planning stages for restoration, is said to be haunted by Manuel A. Bookbinder, or Old Book. Old Book was a patient who worked with the burial crew at the hospital until his own death.

11. Holmes Death Castle Location

611 W 63rd St., Chicago, IL

EMF rating: 86.4

A post office now stands on the former site of the Holmes Death Castle, or Murder Castle, built by serial killer H.H. Holmes. He built the hotel to lure in 1893 Chicago World’s Fair visitors, then tortured and murdered his guests, including women and children. In this area, witnesses say phantom screams can be heard, and pet dogs are visible shaken when they walk past. Some locals are reported to cross the street when walking past, to avoid being too near the place and its negative energy.

10. Morton College

3801 S Central Ave., Cicero, IL 60804

EMF rating: 87.0

The spirit of Emily, a young girl who was murdered, lingers around this school. The murder took place on nearby Laramie Bridge before the school was built. Security guards have seen Emily on the rooftops at night, and theatergoers have heard her in the theater, especially during violent plays that contain murder scenes.

9. McPike Mansion

2018 Alby St., Alton, IL

EMF rating: 87.5

This 1869 mansion is the site of many strange happenings. It has been seen on the TV show Scariest Places on Earth. Apparitions have been seen in the hallways, and children’s laughter has been heard.

8. Clark Street Bridge

Clark Street Bridge, Chicago, IL

EMF rating: 87.5

The Eastland Disaster occurred nearby in 1915, in which an overloaded passenger steamer Eastland capsized while still tied to the dock, killing over 800 people. It is said that their moans and cries can still be heard around the Clark Street Bridge.

7. American Flight 191 crash site

Off 430 W Touhy Ave., Des Plaines, IL 60018

EMF rating: 87.5

On May 25, 1979, Flight 191 lost some parts of its engine as it was taking off and flipped on the runway. It exploded into a huge fireball, killing all the crew and passengers aboard and 2 people on the ground. Shortly after, folks reported white lights moving around in the crash site. Folks who lived in an adjacent mobile home park said within hours of the crash, they got knocks on their doors and windows, but no one was there. The knocking went on for months, and then their doorknobs beagn to turn. Some residents opened their doors to find a person standing there, saying he needed help to get his luggage or make a connecting flight. A resident walking his dog reported that a young man came up to him, smelling like gas and smoldering, and said he needed to make an emergency call. Then he disappeared. Moans and crying have been heard coming from the crash site as well.

6. Mount Carmel Cemetery

Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, IL

EMF rating: 88.9

This cemetery is said to be haunted by the ghost of Julia Buccola Petta. One family of visitors claim that, upon noticing their small boy was missing, they retraced their steps to find him hand in hand with a lady in a white gown. When they came closer, she disappeared.

Al Capone is also buried here.

5. Ashmore Estates

Off E. County Road 1050 N., Ashmore, IL

EMF rating: 89.5

Reportedly a former almshouse, this building was purchased for use as a haunted attraction. It was reportedly haunted by many ghosts, including Elva SKinner, a woman who died in a fire in the former almshouse. The house has been featured in several books and TV shows including Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures. In 2013, the site was said to have suffered a violent windstorm and was damaged extensively, but reports are now that the home has been purchased by a new family and renovations have been undertaken.

4. Waldheim Cemetery

1400 Des Plaines Ave., Forest Park, IL 60130

EMF rating: 91.7

The Flapper Ghost is a brunette beauty with a bob and 1920s clothing. She has been seen since the 1930s. Her identity remains a mystery, but throughout history she has been seen in the evenings at dance halls and asked for a ride home. She would direct them to Waldheim Cemetery, saying she lived in the caretaker’s cottage or in an apartment nearby, but those who followed her found her to disappear among the tombstones. In 1973 she was seen in broad daylight by a family visiting the cemetery, who were surprised when she vanished into a mausoleum. The Flapper Ghost’s identity is not known, but she was most active in the 1930s and the 1970s.

3. Crenshaw House

Crenshaw Lane, Equality, IL

This place is closed to the public. It is owned by the state of Illinois and there are numerous No Trespassing signs. You are cautioned not to attempt to visit this place. Crenshaw house was a major player in kidnapping freed and escaped slaves and returning them to slavery in the south. Although Illinois was technically a free state, an exception was made for Crenshaw’s plantation as no free men could be found who were willing to work the salt mining operation as it was too arduous and dangerous. Crenshaw used slave labor to amass an immense fortune. Not content with his wealth, he set about kidnapping freed slaves and selling them back into slavery in the south. History has it that the attic of the “Slave House” was where he’d keep former slaves, before selling them back into slavery. People claim that it is this area that is completely haunted, with numerous ghostly sounds being heard, which include cries for help and the rattling of chains.

2. McKendree University

701 College Rd., Lebanon, IL 62254

EMF rating: 93.3

This college has seen its share of tragedy, and the spiritual activity reported here can attest to that. On the main campus, it is said that a distraught student once hung himself in the bell tower, and his ghost has been seen on the upper floors. In the Alumni House, an elderly woman was killed when she fell down the stairs, and her husband hung himself in the building shortly thereafter. It is also said that a baby died of pneumonia here, and the back office, which used to be the nursery, permanently stays very cold. Footsteps can be heard throughout the lower floors, and red eyes are said to appear and watch visitors from the gardening shed. In Carnegie, 3 ghosts are said to reside. TVs have been known to come on or change channels. Eerie feelings and suddenly being grabbed have been reported. In the chapel, the organ is said to play by itself, and footsteps can be heard running down the middle of the sanctuary, although there is no center aisle.

1. Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery

143rd St and Midlothian Tpke., Midlothian, IL 60445

Beginning in the 1970s, visitors here have seen orbs, apparitions, phantom vehicles, and even a floating, shrinking, and vanishing phantom farmhouse.
