Design work is complete for a new 18-hole disc golf course in O'Fallon's Fort Zumwalt Park.

The city has already approved the purchase of materials for the course, and course designer Dave McCormick presented the design for the course to the O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Board earlier this week.

McCormick commented that the park is already set up for multiple uses. "It was a very challenging tract of land because it's diced up," McCormick said. He said that he spend more than 45 hours at the park while completing the design.

McCormick said he designed the first six holes to better accommodate beginners, youth and senior players. "They could loop around and play the first six a couple of times," he said.

The rest of the course's 18 holes get progressively more challenging.

McCormick assured the board that most of the clearing in the park involved the removal of honeysuckle and multiflora, as well as dead trees and limbs. The only trees taken down, he said, were under three-inch diameter, "scraggly" trees.

McCormick said that he believes the course will get a lot of play as soon as it opens, as it lies between courses in St. Louis County and the courses farther out in St. Charles County at Quail Ridge and Indian Camp Creek.

McCormick said that construction should start this fall, but Parks Director Cindy Springer reminded the board that the park closes in mid-October for the holiday lights display.

Springer said that the course could be open to the public in late January or early February.
