BRIGHTON, ONT – The Southern Ontario Sprints invaded Brighton Speedway for round eight of the 2015 tour on Saturday night. The 18 Sprint and 64 stock cars in attendance raced before a near capacity crown at the one-third mile oval on Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 night.
Cory Turner Scores First Career Sprint Car Win At Brighton
Caistor Centre, Ont. native Cory Turner (No.19 KT Tobacco) passed Ohsweken’s Glenn Styres (No.0 Case IH Tractors) on lap 16 of the 25-lap Southern Ontario Sprints feature event and led the final nine laps for his first career Sprint Car win. Styres remains stuck at 49 career Sprint Car wins after a streak of three wins in a row last month.
“It was great. It’s not like we snuck in the back door. We passed Glenn (Styres), which was good because I know how bad he wanted that one last night,” said Turner. “The top started to go away and I got a good run on him on the bottom and made it work.”
Styres and Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) brought the 17-car field to the green flag with Styres taking the early edge. The drivers struggled to get to speed, however, with four cautions slowing the race in the opening seven laps. The stretch included a red flag on lap five when Warren Mahoney (No.25 RBM Carriers) got upside down on the front stretch. It was a relatively minor flip and Mahoney was uninjured.
The cautions didn’t bother either Styres or Turner, who raced to second on lap two. Turner battled Styres for the lead on lap nine, taking the bottom lane with the defending champion ran his famous line against the cushion. Styres was better in turns one and two while Turner appeared quicker at the other end.
On lap 16, Turner drove hard in to turn three to complete the pass and clear Styres. The two drivers then began to fight through lapped traffic and continued to manage a considerable advantage over third-place runner Mitch Brown (No.10B Haldex).
“I was losing three car lengths in one and two and I was making it all back in three and four,” said Turner. “I just tried to get through the lapped traffic as fast as I could. I knew he was not going to go to the bottom. That’s not his style.”
Turner struggled to move a lapped car with two to go reducing his five-car length lead to barely a bumper over Styres on the final lap. Turner remained consistent enough on the bottom to hold off the veteran Styres. Meanwhile, Brown suppressed the charges of Jamie Turner (No.11T KT Tobacco), and Chris Jones (No.11J Jones Automotive).
Brown overcame seemingly insurmountable circumstances to start the main event. The engine on Brown’s car blew up at the end of his qualifying heat. The team changed engines and turned in a third-place finish, just one spot behind Styres, in order to maintain the series point lead after eight races.
Sopaz Steals Dash For Cash
Five Pro Late Models were in attendance with a $500 purse up for grabs in the annual Dash for Cash. Nathan Bosma (No.79) and Brandon Mowat (No.46 Target Fabrication Inc.) brought the field to the green flag in the 10-lap shootout. Mowat jumped to the early lead while Sopaz quickly took over the second spot. The two drivers raced side-by-side for three laps with Sopaz working the cushion. Sopaz drove to the lead on lap six and held off Mowat over the final four circuits to claim the win, his third of the season.
Gregory Foils Ferguson For First Mod Win
Shawn Gregory (No.1 CPS Wood Products) was on rails Saturday night. The Trenton, Ont. driver drove from his sixth-place starting spot to the lead on lap four using the cushion and held off Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) over the final eight laps to claim his first Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified victory of the season.
Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage) and Warren Mowat (No.46 Cormier’s Auto Recycling) brought the 16-car field to the green flag. Hennessy led the first three laps before Gregory took over the point on the fourth circuit.
Second row starter Curtis King (No.07 Ajax Nissan) took a peek inside of Gregory for the lead on lap seven, but couldn’t complete the pass as the top three of Gregory, King, and Ferguson broke away from the field.
Ferguson was able to pass King in turn three on lap 17 after the two made contact and set his sights on Gregory for the race lead. Gregory’s five car-length advantage was erased with three to go. Ferguson got to the back bumper of Gregory’s No.1 machine in traffic and tried the high lane to get to the front. Gregory was flawless on the bottom on route to the win.
Murrell Fails Tech, Anderson Takes Pro Stock Win
Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors) took the lead from polesitter Mike Freeman (No.51 Boyer Chevrolet) on lap six and outdueled Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Lanscaping) and Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) to claim his second win in as many weeks. The win, however, was taken away upon post-race technical inspection. The upper control arms on the No.19 did not meet specification, handing Anderson his third win of the season.
The race was slowed just once – the only feature caution of the night for Brighton’s weekly divisions – when Bob Green (No.26 Barink Electric) spun in turn four and made contact with Jamie Marshall (No.55 C&L Upholstery). Green was able to return after making some repairs while Marshall’s car appeared unscathed.
On the following restart, Murrell challenged Freeman for the lead while the defending champion Anderson was up to fourth from his 10th-place starting spot. By lap eight, Murrell and Anderson had broken away from the field. Anderson furiously tried to reel in the race leader, but couldn’t get close enough to attempt a pass. Ramsay caught the lead group with five to go and maintained the third spot to the checkered flag.
Read Wins First In A Decade
Josh Read (No.29 Frank’s Auto Repair) took the lead from Tyler French (No.0 ABC Taxi) on lap five and checked out in front of the field on route to victory lane. The win was Read’s first in over 10 years, he said in victory lane.
Front row starters Adam Chapman (No.07 Int’l Truckload Service) led for only moment until teammate and second-place starter French captured the point on the opening lap. Read raced from the eighth starting spot to take the lead from French and never gave the rest of the field a chance to regain the top spot in a race that went green to checkers without interruption.
The battle was intense for second between French, Chapman, point leader Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) and Austin Reid (No.85 Young Drivers). In the middle of the battle, French’s No.0 went up in smoke as the power plant hit its expiration date on lap 12. It handed second to Chapman while Reid was third at the finish.
MacGregor, Evans Win Stinger Features
Jorden Pickell (No.93 Sowerby Signs) led the opening three laps of the Quinte Septic Super Stinger feature, but couldn’t escape pressure from fellow front row starter Geoff York (No.33 Patterson Auto Parts). York took over the point on lap three exiting turn four. The current point leader and two-time defending champion Del MacGregor (No.19 R.Ward Construction) drove to second a lap later and raced side-by-side with York for the lead on lap six. MacGregor completed the pass in turn three on his way to the halfway mark and would not be caught by second-place finisher Andy Fletcher (No.42 Like-Nu Driveway Seal). It was MacGregor’s second consecutive win and third this season.
Dawson Evans (No.01 Cannifton Garage) started on the pole for the second-ever Quinte Septic Junior Stinger feature and never gave up the point position on route to the victory. Nathan Buckey (No.15) wasted little time racing to second after starting outside the second row. Buckey pressed the race leader Evans to give up the top spot in the dying laps, but couldn’t get close enough to complete the pass. Ken Evans (No.00 Cannifton Garage), Brant Leggett (No.40) and Megan Golden (No.07 Ontario Duct Cleaning).
Next Week at Brighton Speedway – August 15
Brighton Speedway features a full show of racing next Saturday, August 15, presented by Greig Truck and Trailer and the Belleville Bulls. The Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Models will be in action for the final race of the Hotch’s Auto Parts Triple Crown. Race time is 7:00pm and adult admission is just $10. Children six and under are always free.
