This week’s photo:
Charlie Miller, in what I believe is one of the Gordon Outboards. It was blue, in color. Over his career, Charlie drove an assortment of cars, but I just remember him in this one that is pictured. His win record will appear further down in this week’s column.
Some personal/family stuff:
It’s been almost 8 months since I left New York and came down here to Cape Coral, Florida, to live with my daughter, Sandy. And as I start this on Sunday, it’s been 10 months since the love of my life passed away. Do I miss her? Of course! Do I miss it back north? Yes, I do. But I do miss some of my family a lot more. My son, Eric & his wife Catherine, who are in Montgomery, N.Y. My daughter Judy & her husband, Willie, who are in Sparrow Bush, N.Y. Son Tom Jr. and his wife Penny and their daughter, Marisa, up state in Dexter, N.Y. Even though my daughter Sarah & her family are down here in Florida, I really don’t get to see them all that much. My sister, Tiny, had a fire in her house in Montvale, N.J. and from what I’ve been told, it really isn’t worth repairing. She’s now out in Ecko, Nevada and close to her son, Gary. My sister, Catherine, who lost her husband recently, is over on the east coast of Florida. Presently, her daughter, Laureen is with her. I know they’ll be heading back north in a week or so for some services for my sisters late husband, Hank. On top of those I’ve mentioned from up north are also some grand children and great grand children, too. Yes, I do miss them a ton. Maybe one of these days, I’ll be able to get another set of wheels and will be able to make a trip back north. Hey, ya never know. I do know Eric has some serious thoughts of getting out of New York and heading to North Carolina. Biggest problem he’s having is finding a car painting job. He does have a house lined up. Maybe he’ll luck out and something will come up.
I usually stay away from “Junk” food. Hey, on occasion I like to have something, ya know? You like Potato Chips? Pringles? You might want to check this out:

Racin’ stuff:
Here’s a question that was posted on Facebook this past couple of days:
“Who holds the record for the most feature wins in 1 week dirt modified?”
No, I have no idea, but quite a few people posted their thoughts.
Model Midget kits – Hey, I’ve made them ever since the mid 50’s. The Monogram Midgets are just about 1/18th scale. I’ve made quite a few slot cars out of them, and over time, made a few slot car tracks, too. I still have quite a few bodies. But what I find kind of amazing is what they sell for today from around $10.00 up to into the 40’s – per kit!

It seems like “Demo Derbies” are the main attraction at OCFS anymore. Ah, for the good old days of good racing at that track. Now, it seems whomever starts on the pole wins the feature. From what I’ve heard, there haven’t been too many fans in the stands. Hey, what do you expect? The place has been falling apart for quite a few years now. And, sad to say, not much being done as far as improvements being made. God only knows when a new clay racing surface was put down. You’re “handcuffed” as to what ya can buy there, to eat, too. I had heard that those that had the roast beef & ham under the stands, had a buyer for it a few years ago. Then I had heard that prior to that woman opening it up, the rent was raised. So, now it’s vacant. Kinda like where the French Fries and Maxi Dough were. I had heard that the ceiling up above them had started falling down some years ago. Yup, it shows the effects of the neglect when ya look at the stands on race night. Sad thing is, when I see photos of the other tracks up there in New York, their stands look to be quite full.
Some news from I-88:
“Alcohol at the Speedway decision
Due to a recent communication from the New York State Liquor Authority, we are unable to allow fans to bring alcohol into the speedway. A local licensed vendor, The Hitchin Post, will be available to sell alcohol at the speedway. We apologize, however it was a decision outside of our control.”

Give this some thought:
I was reading up, and looking at some photos, on the Internet about Dale Earnhardt, Jr. winning at Talladega, and in some photos, it showed the enjoyment of the fans in the stands, after he had won. Then I had a thought – what if Junior was fatally injured, or injured in such a way, in a racing accident, that wouldn’t allow him to race anymore? I know some fans left the sport after his father was fatally injured, but I have to wonder, how many would leave the sport if something happened to Junior?

Kyle Busch tests late model:
Following a 10-week absence from a race car, Kyle Busch got behind the wheel of a Late Model last week. Busch, the driver of the #18 M&Ms Toyota, has been sidelined since he sustained injuries to his foot and right leg during an accident in the XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 21. “We have a program for him and we’re moving forward with everything – and that was part of it,” team owner Joe Gibbs said of Busch’s test, prior to the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. Gibbs did not recall where Busch tested his Kyle Busch Motorsports car, however, the team was expected to run at nearby Caraway Speedway, a .455-mile track in Asheboro, N.C. or Hickory Speedway. Busch is expected to return to Hickory this week in a KBM Late Model. NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said he had not heard whether Busch had been medically cleared to return to competition. Busch met with the media on April 15. At the time, Busch said his doctors had not offered a timetable for his return. Erik Jones is scheduled to drive the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota next week at Kansas Speedway, but speculation is that Busch will be in the car for the All Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 16th. During his media availability, Busch said he hoped to be eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Last month, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France told a group of sports editors that depending on when Busch returned “it was more likely than not,” that the sanctioning body would attempt to “accommodate” the driver.(Motorsport)(5-4-2015)
UPDATE:
Kyle Busch tweeted Monday morning that he will not compete in a Late Model race this weekend despite reports that he was expected to compete in an event at Hickory Motor Speedway. Busch tested a Late Model car Friday as part of his return to racing after being injured in the season-opening NASCAR Xfinity race at Daytona.(NBC Sports)(5-4-2015)
Pit crew member ejected at Talladega for not wearing protective gear:
A crew member from #51-Justin Allgaier’s team was ejected from the GEICO 500 on Sunday when he was found handling a fuel can behind pit wall without wearing a helmet or head sock. Mark O’Donnell was removed from Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, the 2.66-mile trioval. Pit road fire safety has become a bigger issue recently after a blaze in an XFINITY Series race at Richmond injured three crewman from two different teams. A minor fire also erupted from a gas can during a #31-Ryan Newman pit stop on Sunday.(USA Today)(5-4-2015)
Richmond spring race could be moved to Sunday:
International Speedway Corp., is exploring the possibility of moving the start of the spring Richmond race from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon, an ISC official told NBC Sports. “I’m not going to say seriously, but we are exploring it,” said Clay Campbell, president of Martinsville Speedway, who also oversees Richmond International Raceway and Darlington Raceway for International Speedway Corp. “We’re always entertaining whatever can make our events better for the broadcasters, for the fans and for the competitors and that’s part of it.” There are other considerations. ISC, as part of its typical post-event critique, is examining how far Richmond’s ticket holders travel to attend that race. “If we run Saturday night, there are so many fans that are not staying there or not staying on property or not staying in the region and they drive back home in the middle of the night,” Campbell said. “How many that is versus if we did it Sunday and they could leave right after the race and drive home – that’s things we need to look at and do some questioning with our fanbase.”(NBC Sports)(5-4-2015)
Parsons selling #98 team?
Phil Parsons declined comment on Saturday regarding the sale of the #98 Phoenix Construction Ford. Sources told motorsport.com the #98 team struck a deal with Jay Robinson on Wednesday night. Robinson, who fields the #62 Premium Motorsports Chevy with Brendan Gaughan (and a 2nd part-time team, #66), could not be immediately reached for comment. Josh Wise currently pilots the #98 Phil Parsons Racing Ford, which currently lists Mike Curb as the owner.(Motorsport)(5-3-2015)
NAPA Auto Parts will sponsor Elliott in the #24:
NAPA Auto Parts will grow its relationship with 11-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports in 2016 when it becomes the majority sponsor of driver Chase Elliott and his #24 Chevy SS team. The news was announced Tuesday evening in Las Vegas during the NAPA EXPO, which is attended by more than 17,000 store owners, managers and dealers. The expanded partnership will feature NAPA AUTO PARTS as a primary sponsor of the #24 team in 24 Sprint Cup races annually, including the season-opening Daytona 500, and as an associate-level partner in all other events. The agreement covers the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons. NAPA was the full-season primary sponsor during Elliott’s historic 2014 XFINITY Series campaign when he became NASCAR’s youngest-ever national series champion while earning rookie of the year and most popular driver honors. In 2015, NAPA remains the sole primary sponsor for Elliott’s second full NXS season with JR Motorsports along with the driver’s Sprint Cup debut schedule, which includes five points-paying races with Hendrick Motorsports. It was announced in January that Elliott, 19, will join Hendrick Motorsports as a full-time Sprint Cup driver in 2016. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native currently is third in the 2015 NXS standings with seven top-10 finishes in nine races. In 51 combined NXS and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events, he has recorded four wins, 25 top-five finishes and 40 top-10s.Additional sponsorship for Elliott’s 2016 Sprint Cup season will be announced at a later date.(Hendrick Motorsports)(5-6-2015)
Statement from Richard Childress:
Regarding final appeal ruling on the #31 Chevy team: “We do not agree with the final appeal ruling. We feel we had a compelling case and still fell we were in the right and the facts presented today would have proved that. We do appreciate the opportunity to be heard. We stand behind our suspended team members and look forward to their return. We will now move on and continue or goals of winning races and making the Chase for the Champion.”(Richard Childress Racing)(5-6-2015)
Penalties against Newman’s team upheld:
Today the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer, Mr. Bryan Moss, heard and considered the appeal of a P5 penalty issued on March 31, 2015 to Richard Childress (owner), Ryan Newman (driver), Lucas Lambert (crew chief), James Bender (tire technician) and Philip Surgen (race engineer) relative to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series vehicle #31 at Auto Club Speedway. The penalty concerns the following sections in the 2015 NASCAR rule book:
12.1: Actions detrimental to stock car racing
20.16: Wheels and tires
A. Any device, modification, or procedure to the tire or wheel, including the valve stem hardware, that is used to release pressure, beyond normal pressure adjustments, from the tire and/or inner shield, will not be permitted.
20.16.2: Tires
F. Modifications to the tires, by treatment or any other means, will not be permitted.
12.5.3.5.2: Minimum P5 Penalty Options (includes all four points below):
A. Loss of 50 championship driver and owner points, regardless of whether the violation occurred during a Championship race or not
B. $75,000-$125,000 fine
C. Suspension for the next six series Championship Races, plus any non-championship races or special events which might occur during that time period, for the crew chief and any other team members as determined by NASCAR
D. Probation through the end of the calendar year for all suspended members, or for a six-month period following the issuance of the penalty notice if that period spans across two consecutive seasons
12.5.3.5.3: P5 Level infractions detected during post-race inspection:
If the infraction is detected during post-race inspection, then the following penalty elements will be added to those listed previously in this section:
A. Loss of an additional 25 Championship driver and owner points; regardless of whether it was a Championship Race or not
B. Loss of an additional $50,000
The original penalty assessed included a $125,000 ($75,000 plus $50,000) fine, six-race suspension and probation through Dec. 31 to Lambert; six-race suspension and probation through Dec. 31 to both Bender and Surgen; and the loss of 75 (50 plus 25) championship car owner and 75 (50 plus 25) championship driver points to both Childress and Newman.
On April 16, a three-person National Motorsports Appeals Panel heard the appeal and made the following decisions:
1. The Appellants violated the Rule or Rules set forth in the Penalty Notice and it is a P5 level violation.
2. The Panel amends the original Penalty levied by NASCAR because there is no written explanation of what constitutes a post-race inspection. Therefore the Penalty elements added under Section 12.5.3.5.3. are removed and the Penalty adjusted to:
-Loss of 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Car Owner points for Richard Childress.
-Loss of 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Driver points for Ryan Newman.
-$75,000 fine. Suspended for the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Races, plus any non-Championship Races or Special Events which might occur during that time period. Placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31 for crew chief Lucas Lambert.
– Suspended for the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Races, plus any non-Championship Races or Special Events which might occur during that time period. Placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31 for Tire Technician James Bender.
-Suspended for the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Races, plus any non-Championship Races or Special Events which might occur during that time period. Placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31 for Race Engineer Philip Surgen.
Upon hearing today’s testimony, Bryan Moss, the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer, made the following decisions:
· Based on a preponderance of evidence, the Appellants violated the Rules.
· Based on a preponderance of evidence, the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer upholds the penalty as amended by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel.
The decision of the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer is final and binding on all parties.(NASCAR)(5-6-2015)

Maybe it’s me, but I find that when the ARDC ran at Linda’s last week, they only had 16 cars. Will that be the “norm” for this season? I can recall when the ARDC was just bout the top midget racing club in the US. Now, it seems that they’re at the bottom of the list. Sad.
In USC Silver Crown racing, I see they show 18 cars in the main at Toledo.
Ryan Godown has now won 4 straight at New Egypt.
It should be interesting to see who might step up and sponsor Danica, now that Go Daddy is leaving.
Last Sunday, at Indy, 28 cars were on the track. Fastest of the day was Juan Pablo Montoya with a speed of 226.772. Davey Hamilton, who was subbing for Townsend Bell was 26th fastest, while Brian Clauson was 27th.
Note: I don’t believe that Hamilton will be competing in the 500, however.
Any idea why it is that we see so many feature winners in racing, today, that start on the front row and lead every lap?

FOR RELEASE BEGINNING MONDAY, MAY 4
SMALL BLOCK MODIFIEDS AND VINTAGE RACE CARS SPICE UP THE MAY 9 PROGRAM AT ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY
MIDDLETOWN, NY (May 6)……The popular Small-Block Modifieds will make their third 2015 appearance on Saturday, May 9 at the historic five-eighths-mile “Hard Clay” Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York. In addition, folks will get a look back to an earlier era as the Vintage Modified race cars will also be in action.
Bob McGannon won the season inaugural race for the Small-Block Modifieds, while Tim Hindley captured the feature on week two of the point season. McGannon and Hindley and two-dozen other competitors will be after the trophy, cash prize money, and the glory that comes from winning at one of the country’s oldest speedways.
The evening’s schedule includes a full racing program featuring Big-Block Modifieds, Sportsman, Small-Block Modifieds, Street Stocks, Four-Cylinder race cars, and the Vintage machines in qualifying heats and feature races. The evening’s activities are sponsored by Sparta Trucking and New York Truck Parts.

HISTORIC USAC/WoO “DOUBLEHEADERS” FRIDAY, SATURDAY AT ELDORA;
DARLAND SEEKS HISTORY-MAKING 100TH NATIONAL USAC WIN
What is being billed as the “Mother of all Sprint Car Weekends” unfolds this weekend at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio and race fans will witness a historic first.
The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series joins the World of Outlaws in the first “doubleheaders” ever for the two series. Both series compete both nights at the famed half-mile oval.
Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind., whose 55 career feature wins are an all-time series record, will seek his 100th USAC National feature victory in the two-night extravaganza. A victory would place him in the company of only three previous USAC drivers who achieved the century mark during their careers. A.J. Foyt scored 154, Rich Vogler grabbed 134 and Mel Kenyon 111.
Tracy Hines, who has 11 career Eldora wins to his credit, is also approaching the magic century mark. He ranks fifth on USAC’s all-time National win list at 91.
Chase Stockon of Elizabethtown, Ind. currently leads the series standings with “top-10″ finishes in all 10 previous outings this season. He has a trio of runner-up finishes but continues to seek his first 2015 victory.
Robert Ballou, a three-time winner already in 2015, trails Stockon by just 37 points entering Friday night’s race. Darland stands third in the standings, just one point behind Ballou.
2015 AMSOIL USAC Sprint Car National Championship Points: 1-Chase Stockon-591, 2-Robert Ballou-564, 3-Dave Darland-563, 4-Brady Bacon-559, 5-Kevin Thomas Jr.-503, 6-Jon Stanbrough-477, 7-Tracy Hines-453, 8-C.J. Leary-433, 9-Chris Windom-342, 10-Justin Grant-315.

Rick Laubach Continues ‘Assault’ Of Short Track Super Series Fueled By Hi-Tek, Tops Big Diamond ‘Anthracite Assault’ Tuesday For $5,540 Payday In ‘Coal Country’ With Gary Spotts No. 91; Big D Beats The Weather Despite Widespread Rain, Poor Forecast
Written by Cody Manmiller
MINERSVILLE, PA – Rick Laubach continued his assault of the Short Track Super Series Fueled By Hi-Tek, conquering an extremely tough field at Big Diamond Speedway on Tuesday.
Laubach drew an all-important front row starting spot and glided to his second straight Short Track Super Series (STSS) victory. This, the ‘Anthracite Assault,’ was the only North/South Region combo race for the season, and points were earned for both the Pioneer Pole Buildings South Region presented by Scotty’s Speed & Diesel and the Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region.
Laubach, 42, of Hellertown, Pa. captured the STSS South Region opener at N.J.’s Bridgeport Speedway last month providing for a fantastic start to his championship contention. On Tuesday night, he pocketed $5,540 including lap money, bonuses and the posted purse for his efforts in the 50-lap main event.
The series’ first trip to Big Diamond served as the second event in both the eight-race North Region and the five-race South Region.
The co-promotion involving BD Motorsports Media LLC and speedway owners Jake and Jasmine Smulley went off despite widespread rain north and south of the speedway, a 90 percent chance of precipitation and sprinkles during the three features. The show was spun off rapid fire as a result of the threatening weather.
“I was excited when I first heard about this series because I’ve won races at all of these tracks in the South Region,” Laubach noted in Victory Lane. “It’s a very lucrative deal with all the money.”
Laubach, in his Gary Spotts-owned No. 91, different from the car that he used to dominate the field at the Bridgeport ‘South Jersey Shootout,’ took the lead from the outset from pole-sitter Nick Nye before the first caution waved on lap six for a spinning Shawn Ward.
The real action began to develop just behind the leader as the top five reached lapped traffic. Jeff Strunk, Erick Rudolph, Stewart Friesen and Doug Manmiller scraped and clawed for spots two through five in very heavy slower traffic. Friesen’s terrific move pushed him to second from fourth just before Rudolph, Ransomville, N.Y, was sent spinning in turns one and two on lap 28. At times, the foursome made it three-wide while trying to make their way through the gaggle of slower cars ahead of them.
Trouble erupted on the ensuing restart. Manmiller, of Shoemakersville, Pa., restarting in the fourth position, spun after contact busted the rear-end of his Jason Miller-owned car, sending it sideways in front of the field. Numerous cars scrambled to avoid and sustained damage during the melee. One more tangle slowed the event, when Billy Pauch Sr. and Danny Johnson collided entering turn one when the green unfurled to draw the yellow again.
For the remainder of the distance, Friesen chased Laubach, settling for a runner-up effort after starting eighth in the Jeff Daley-owned No. 44. The Sprakers, N.Y., driver took home $3,160 for his runner-up effort.
“Hats off to Rick,” Friesen said. “He’s hot right now and he is awesome here. I needed longer runs for my right-rear tire to start taking off. We went a little harder and the cautions killed me. I’m happy to get out of PA with a second.”
Friesen leads the STSS North Region standings after winning the opener at N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway April 11.
Jeff Strunk of Boyertown, Pa., drove the Zubi’s Racing No. 88 Hig Fab Chassis to a solid third-place finish.
“It feels good to be on the podium at one of these races,” Strunk said. “It was a quality field tonight for sure.”
Wheeling from 21st starting position, Anthony Perrego of Montgomery, N.Y., drove Gary Mann’s No. 55 to a fourth-place finish. The event’s biggest mover was Jamie Mills of Milford, Del., who placed fifth after starting 26th on the grid. Mills has been able to carve through traffic in both STSS South Region events run thus far.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, N.J, an impressive feat after having to come from the back of the pack on two occasions in John Pakenham’s big-block; Ryan Watt, Boyertown, Pa., who added another top-10 finish at STSS South Region races; 2014 STSS Champion Andy Bachetti, who took an eighth-place finish back to Sheffield, Mass., after starting 29th; Milford, Del.’s H.J. Bunting, who moved from the 19th starting spot to ninth in a rare non-Delaware start with Jake Marine’s No. 85; and Craig Hanson of Johnstown, N.Y, in his first Big Diamond appearance.
Another competitive field of cars featuring 44 Modifieds from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts attempted to qualify for the ‘Anthracite Assault.’
Heat winners were Friesen, Johnson, Rudolph, Strunk and Pauch Jr. Consolation victors were Perrego and Tyler Dippel of Wallkill, N.Y.
Charles Fayash III of Allentown, Pa., earned an emotional $1,000 payday in the Sportsman 25-lap event, in memory of the late Andy Fayash. In a battle to the finish, Fayash fended off the challenges of Garden State rookie Brandon Grosso. On the final lap, Grosso slid wide in a bid for the lead, allowing J.R. Fulper to take second. Grosso, Steve Searock IV and Tim Fitzpatrick trailed.
Moonlighting in an XCel 600 Modified, Wallkill, N.Y.’s Tyler Dippel, a young Modified standout, scored the 20-lap, $1,000-to-win triumph with a three-wide pass two laps from the finish. Dippel ducked inside Aaron Bowes and Brian Carber to take the lead and drove Doug Borger’s ‘X’ rental car on to the win over Carber, Richie Hitzler, Bowes and Nathan Brinker.
The Short Track Super Series Fueled By Hi-Tek continues Tuesday, May 19 (rain date: May 20) with the New York Truck Parts Inc. ‘Battle of the Bullring 3’ at N.Y.’s Accord Speedway. Modifieds run 53 laps for $5,300 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to start. Sportsman (Open vs. Crate 602) and Slingshots complete the three-division card. This is event No. 3 of the Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region.
