I always loved this little BMW powered midget. A.J. Foyt had it restored down in Texas. When this car ran good, it was almost untouchable. It was quite temperamental, that’s for sure. Here are a few photos of the car, as it is today and as it was back in the 40’s. Also a couple of photos of Russ Klar, too.

The restored Maier BMW dual engined midget.

Some engineering, huh? Don’t go by what the info says, since I do not have the other photo that was with the article.

Here’s what the Maier BMW midget looked like back in its racing days. That is Russ Klar in the seat.

Russ Klar in the seat. I’m not sure if this is the Maier BMW or not. Russ did drive quite a few different midgets and Sprint cars in his career. Back in around 1959, when the held TQ races in the Teaneck, NJ Armory, Russ was one of the competitors. He was my future wife’s favorite driver. One night after the races, we went to check out the car he was driving and to talk with him. Without hesitating, he invited my future wife to sit in that powder blue # 16 TQ. Made her night! His daughter, Anne, is married to Drew Fornoro, son of Nick & Bette Fornoro. believe it or not.

Some Oswego stuff:

Well, at least this hole can’t get any deeper, can it? Photo from last Friday. I don’t know, but it sure looks like the clay was just put over the asphalt, doesn’t it? With rain on Saturday, they’ve come out with this: “They have scrapped today and moved everything to tomorrow, also shortened the bb and 358 race now 200 and 100 laps.”

Sunday’s schedule will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Pro Stock Time Trials, followed by Big Block Modified and Sportsman Last Chance Qualifiers. At 11:45 a.m. all qualified Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified drivers will be on the midway for an autograph session with the fans. After a break for track prep, the racing will continue at 2:00 p.m. with the Pro Stock 30 Last Chance Qualifiers and the Big Block Modified Feature, now the Bud Light 200. From SuperDirtWeekOnline.comThe late afternoon program will then kickoff with the Pro Stock 30. Last Chance Qualifiers and the Big Block Modified Feature, now the Bud Light 200. From SuperDirtWeekOnline.comThe late afternoon program will then kickoff with the Pro Stock 30 feature, followed by the 358 Modified Riccelli-Northern Salute the Troops 100, and closing with the Sportsman Chevy Performance

Reading one of the articles about the modified race at Oswego, I’ve read that Brett Hearn had words similar to this: “I’m just glad I got out alive!”

As for some comments, both pro and con, there are quite a few on DTD’s forum. Me? Well I really can’t say all that much since I was not there – just reading and viewing some photos taken of the track, there were some horrendous holes in the racing surface. It should be interesting to see what happens in 2017 and this event being at Oswego again (contract for 2017 has been signed, best I know. (Check the little paragraph below this one). As for all the amount of cars getting upside down, one would have to figure the track surface had a lot to do with that. Heck, for years they’ve run 200 laps at OCFS at Easter States, and I don’t think all the total amount of flips they’ve had are maybe about the same, overall, as there were last weekend.

Here’s an interesting posting on DTD’s forum about Oswego and the Central NY Raceway Park

Brian Carter CEO of the World Racing Group had an exclusive one on one interview with Len Sammons after today’s press conference. Super Dirt Week will be held at Oswego Speedway again next year with funding from NY State IF Central NY Raceway Park is not completed. It is not guaranteed to be at Oswego Speedway again next year but there is a very good chance it will be.

VETERAN ORANGE COUNTY RACERS SEEK EASTERN STATES GOLD

Former winners looking for a return to Victory Lane

MIDDLETOWN, NY (October 9)……..Four veteran drivers who are also previous Eastern States victors and Orange County Fair Speedway Big-Block Modified point champions are looking to a return to Victory Lane in the headline Eastern States 200, Sunday, October 23 at the historic Middletown, New York five-eighths-mile “Hard Clay” race track. The four, who compete weekly at the speedway, include 1988 winner Rich Eurich, 2007 winner Jeff Heotzler, 2009 titlist Jerry Higbie, and Tommy Meier, last year’s winner of the 200-lap grind. The entire October 21-23 55th Annual Eastern States Weekend is presented by Halmar International, WLR Construction, and Arkel Motors.

In addition to their Eastern States 200 trophies, this quartet of long-time Orange County racers own a combined total of 14 Big-Block Modified track point championships. Heotzler and Higbie top this ranking, each with four titles, while Eurich and Meier each have earned three point championships.

They will be challenged by a star-studded lineup of Big-Block Modified drivers from the entire Northeast dirt track Modified circuit as well as the other highly talented Orange County weekly competitors for the trophy and top prize money in this prestigious event. With $35,000 going to the winner—and $500 just for making the starting field—this matches the 2015 purse, the richest two races in Eastern States 200 Championship history.

One Orange County driver who has yet to taste Eastern States 200 victory champagne is two-time Modified point champion Tim Hindley. Hindley, who returned to Modified action late in the season, finished third in both the 2013 and 2014 Eastern States 200s. He would like nothing more than to add his name to this honor role of outstanding Modified competitors.

Time trials and qualifying races for the Eastern States 200 will take place on Friday, October 21, with last chance consolation races set for Sunday prior to the 2:30 pm start of the 200. Also on Sunday, the Street Stocks will compete in qualifying races leading to their 25-lap Eastern States championship race.

On Eastern States Sunday, the fairgrounds and pits open at 8:00 am, with spectator gates opening at 9:00 am. On-track activities begin at 9:30 am with the annual Pit Party when all fans are invited to join the racers along the track’s historic homestretch. Cars from all Orange County’s racing divisions will be on display, and drivers will be on hand to greet fans and sign autographs. Following the Pit Party, hot laps and racing promptly gets under way.

Advance tickets for Sunday or the entire Eastern States Weekend as well as camping and parking permits are available at the Speedway Office during regular business hours, or credit card sales (Visa and MasterCard) by calling 845-342-2573. Additional information can be found at the official Orange County Fair Speedway website, www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net.

Driver looking for a little help so he can run Eastern States:

Jeff Heotzler has a car already except for one little thing. He needs an engine. The “Jeffer” can still get around OCFS with the best of them Who might have an extra or spare engine for the “Jeffer”?

Also, in case you are/were not aware:

Saturday, October 15th there will be open practice at OCFS from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Pit gates will open at 3:00 PM. $25.00 pit admission. Free to watch from the grandstands. I doubt the drive-in will be open.

I’ve had this information in my ‘puter for quite some time, now. If you’re interested in some “Back in the day” midget races here in the Northeast, and some drivers, this is what I have:

List of tracks and drivers.

As of now, and thanks to the following people: John DaDalt, Jerry Santibanes, Gordon White, Stephen Bubb, Jim Chini, Tom Motter, Ed Hitze, Keith Herbst and about 20 other historians, I’ve been fortunate to get some midget racing results for quite a few tracks here in the northeast, and also some win records of various drivers, with the possibility of getting even more of both. A good portion of the names above were mentioned to me by Jerry Santibanes.

For the drivers, I now have lists of wins for:

Charlie Miller, Ed “Dutch” Schaefer, George Rice, Johnny Ritter, George Fonder, Bill Holmes, Wes Saegesser, Ronney Householder, Len Duncan, Ted Tappett, Johnny Coy, Bill Schindler, Duane Carter, Henry Banks, Mel Kenyon, Sleepy Tripp and Nick Fornoro. Also, George Rice “Big car” results for 1934 & 35.

I have race results (mostly top three in some cases) from the following tracks:

Note from Jerry Santibanes:

“These are the top winners in the midgets (at least based on my research): Bill Schindler (300+), Sleepy Tripp (250), Dutch Schaefer (200+), Bob Tattersall (200). Ronney Householder (190), Wally Zale (180) and then possibly Mel Kenyon. These are my estimates, based on my current lists–remember I’m always adding and deleting based on new information. Rough figures to be sure, but indicative of how well these drivers performed in the midgets. Other big winners were Ray Richards, Ted Duncan, Billy Cantrell, Allen Heath, Ralph Pratt, Fred Agabashian, Hank Butcher, Bill Holmes, Duane Carter and several other guys who topped the century mark.”

If interested in anything, please e-mail me at: ygordad@yahoo.com and I’ll send the results via attachments in a response back to you.

My son, Eric, who’s been helping Jimmy Johnson on his race car, went to the I-88 (Afton) Speedway over the weekend. It was his first visit to that track, and he was quite impressed. There’s been some talk about the track not opening next year. Well, as of now, they will be.

What follows came out on the DTD Forum on Monday night:

“Ron Ford and myself Leon Andrus after our scheduled meeting with the Afton Fair Board on our proposal to promote the speedway now known as I-88 it can now become official that the two of us will be the promoters of the track for the 2017-racing-season. I mentioned it was in the works before and looked good for us but it is know official and we can’t be happier to see the track continue on its upswing that Jamie & Denise Page got it to. Coming off a great 14min. 50-lap Short Track Super National event that went green to checker and the last race held by the former promoters we wanted to make sure everyone knew the track will be around with the track getting the first attention. If you have interest in becoming a Marketing partner at a well kept facility with a throng of fans that are true supporters of people that support auto races then we have a package for you. We will have a advertising package for as little as $300.00. So get on board and reach either of us on Facebook or you can call at Ron 607.624.3772 or Leon Andrus at 607.648.8864. The New Era Begins! Keep watching for more press releases.”

Allentown & Trenton Indoor Race Tickets Go On Sale August 17!

TRENTON, NJ August 5, 2016 . . . Tickets are going on sale on Wednesday, August 17 for the Trenton (NJ) and Allentown (PA) Indoor auto racing events, promoted by Len Sammons Motorsports Productions (LSMP).

The Battle Of Trenton is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 9-10.

The Allentown Indoor event presented by Ironton Telephone is slated for Friday and Saturday, December 30-31.

“The best seats sell out quickly for these races,” warned LSMP’s Len Sammons. “The sooner folks order their race tickets for these events, the better opportunity they will have to get closer to the action.”

The Trenton event, now in its fifth running, is held at Sun National Bank Center in the New Jersey state capital. Featured are the TQ Midgets that will run full programs each night. Champ Karts and Slingshots will be racing on Friday and Saturday night respectively.

The Allentown race, run at PPL Center in downtown Allentown, Pa., will feature the same schedule: TQs both nights and Champ Karts and Slingshots as the second class on respective nights.

Demand for tickets for the Allentown races is expected to be particularly heavy. The event was a complete sellout last year and has been expanded from one to two days for this year’s running.

“All of our races had excellent turnouts last year but the Allentown race was a true sellout,” Sammons said. “Reserving tickets in advance isn’t a must but for this race it is strongly advised.”

Erick Rudolph of Ransomville. N.Y. won last year’s TQ Battle of Trenton. Chris Daley of Pleasant Valley, N.Y. was the Champ Kart winner.

For Trenton tickets, contact www.comcasttix.com, call 1-800-298-4200 or visit the box office.

Rudolph, the Indoor Auto Racing Championship Fueled By VP Racing series 2015-2016 champion, was also the winner of the inaugural Allentown TQ Indoor race. Eddie Reeder won the companion Slingshot main event.

There were some former OVRP Dirt Oval racers in action this past week. Here is how some of them did – results found on the Internet and in the AARN.

I88: CRSA Sprints: Billy V was 3rd, Brian Krummel 4th, Emily VanInwegen 6th, Joe Kata 10th, Tyler Jashembowski 13th, Chuck Alessi 14th and Josh Pieniazek 19th.

Five Mile: Modifieds: Anthony Perrego was 3rd, Danny Creeden 4th and Brad Szulewski 19th. GRIT Sportsman: Kyle Rohner was 1st.

I-88 Speedway Results October 9, 2016: Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Modifieds (50 Laps): Danny Creeden was 2nd and Anthony Perrego was 24th. Tim Hindley was a DNQ. In the GRIT Sportsman race, Jimmy Johnson was 4th. Jamie Yannone and Rich Coons were DNQ’s. In the Open Sportsman feature, Rick Mill was a DNQ. In the feature for the Empire Lightning Sprints, Alex Bell was 10th.

Tiffany Wambold was 12th in the Hobby Stock feature at Mahoning.

Danny Creeden was 15th at Weedsport in the 358 feature.

At the Short Track Super Series race at I-88, Danny Creeden was 3rd and Anthony Perrego 24th.

In the points for the Short Track Super Series, Danny Creeden was 3rd and Anthony Perrego 5th.

More things found in this week’s AARN:

Overall Modified winners in the Northeast – Matt Sheppard with 26, Kenny Tremont – 17, Stewart Friesen – 16 (includes Oswego – I believe), Danny Creeden 14 and Billy Dunn 14, Andy Bachetti and Eric Rudolph – 13.

A new engine – the Wegner W-16 (a spec engine) that has really kicked some butt lately, cost $13,000.00 OR $15,000.00. Both prices can be found in different articles in the AARN.

13 year old Jackson Gill has had three feature wins at the Can-Am Speedway. Two in Rookies and one in Sportsman.

Note: To me, that’s a tad too young to be driving some form of stock cars. Back in the day, one had to be an adult to race midgets, sprint cars & stock cars. What happened? I also do not believe that small children should be allowed in the pits, too. But the almighty dollar is why they’re in the pits.

Any idea as to what Jimmy Horton and Stewart Friesen have in common? Answer at the end of this weeks column.

Coming up this Saturday at the Grandview Speedway, there will be a 40 lap, 5G’s to win modified race. Sportsman and the TSRS Sprints are also on the card. Info can be found if you go to: www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com.

IT’S OVER: Hillary’s ISIS Email Just Leaked & It’s Worse Than Anyone Could Have Imagined…

In part: “Even though when Trump called Hillary the ‘founder’ of ISIS he was telling the truth and 100% accurate, the media has never stopped ripping him apart over it.

Today the media is forced to eat their hats because the newest batch of leaked emails show Hillary, in her own words, admitting to doing just that, funding and running ISIS.

Going back in time to this week in 1948 – October 10th & 12th:

Sad to say, but I never got to watch the great Ted Horn race. He ran his last race on October 10, 1948 at DuQuoin.

I did have the chance to see the late Johnny Ritter race on numerous occasions. He was my number one favorite driver. Sadly, he took his last ride on October 12, 1948 while he was changing a tire and was struck by another car.

Johnny at Cherry Park in Avon, Ct. in both photos. This particular car is the one Rodger Ward drove to victory at Lime Rock some 11 years later.

Note: Both of these fine drivers kept their cars at “Gasoline Alley” in Paterson, N.J.

On Wednesday, I received the following email. Quite disturbing when one reads it:

This is absolutely unthinkable that nobody, especially the CIA, would have noticed this….

Trump is starting to look better all the time.

This information has all been checked, then double checked… It is 100% Correct.

That’s why there is such an alarm within US government, since Trump’s statement about temporary suspension of migration of Muslims to US until US authorities make sure there is a proper concept of safe penetration of US territory.

People are stunned to learn that the head of the U.S. CIA is a Muslim! I Do hope this wakes up some!

Until it hits you like a ton of bricks read it again, until you understand!

We now have a Muslim government in the US!

John Brennan, current head of the CIA converted to Islam while stationed in Saudi Arabia.

Obama’s top adviser, Valerie Jarrett, is a Muslim who was born in Iran where her parents still live.

Hillary Clinton’s top adviser, Huma Abedin is a Muslim, whose mother and brother are still involved in the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt!

Assistant Secretary for Policy Development for Homeland Security, Arif Aikhan, is a Muslim.

Homeland Security Adviser, Mohammed Elibiary, is a Muslim.

Obama adviser and founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Salam al-Marayati, is a Muslim.

Obama’s Sharia Czar, Imam Mohamed Magid, of the Islamic Society of North America is a Muslim.

Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships, Eboo Patel, is a Muslim.

Nancy Pelosi announced she will appoint Rep Andre Carson, D-Ind, a Muslim, as the first Muslim lawmaker on the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, of all things! It would make Carson the first Muslim to serve on the committee that receives intelligence on the threat of Islamic militants in the Middle East! He has suggested that U.S. Schools should be modeled after Islamic madrassas, where education is based on the Quran!!!

Last but not least, our closet Muslim himself, Barack Hussein Obama.

It’s questionable if Obama ever officially took the oath of office when he was sworn in. He did not repeat the oath properly to defend our nation and our Constitution. Later the Democrats claimed he was given the oath again, in private. Yeah, right.

CIA director John Brennan took his oath on a copy of the Constitution, not a Bible??

Valarie Jarret wrote her college thesis on how she wanted to change America into a Muslim friendly nation and she is an Obama top advisor!

Congressman Keith Ellison took his oath on a copy of the Qur’an, NOT the Bible!

Conservative Congresswoman Michele Bachman, R-MN, was vilified and verbally tarred and feathered by Democrats when she voiced her concern about Muslims taking over our government!

Considering all these appointments, it would explain why Obama and his minions are systematically destroying our nation, supporting radical Muslim groups worldwide, opening our southern border, and turning a blind eye to the genocide being perpetrated on Christians all over Africa and the Middle East!

The more damage Obama does, the more arrogant he’s become!

Our nation and our government has been infiltrated by people who want to destroy us! It can only get worse!

In his book Obama said, “if it comes down to it, I will side with the Muslims.”

If you fail to pass this one on, there’s something wrong… somewhere!

Common sense doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden!

Songs of the week:

Country music legend Alan Jackson’s heartbreaking hit “Sissy’s Song” brought listeners to tears upon its release in 2009. However, with every sad song typically comes a tragic story or various forms of tear jerking experiences. In the case of the “Livin’ On Love” singer, this song hit close to him, literally. Jackson told The Boot,

“I wrote it for a girl that worked for us who died. She was a lady that looked after the whole house. Leslie Fitzgerald was her real name, but we called her Sissy. She had an accident on a motorcycle; she was 40-something [when she died on May 20, 2007]. She was just somebody who was in our house every day … then, all of a sudden, [she was] gone. When people get old, you expect them to die, but it’s different when they are young and it’s tragic like that.”

Jackson went on to explain how he had recorded the song for the woman’s funeral. It wasn’t until later on that the song was praised by various listeners that Jackson was encouraged to add this ballad to his 2009 Good Time album.

The song speaks of unbearable heartbreak, confusion and the sad truth that death can often be sudden and without reason. Listen to the lyrics below to capture the incredible gift that Jackson gave this clearly unforgettable woman.

Note: When I saw the video and heard the song, I immediately thought of my late wife, Joanie.
