THOROLD, ONT – Not since the Azurix North America Triple 50s that celebrated the 50th Anniversary Season in 2001 has there been anything quite like it at Merrittville Speedway.

The Welland and Fort Erie Timber Marts are set to help Merrittville Speedway’s Reunion Committee celebrate 65 seasons of Saturday Night Racing with the Annual Nostalgia Night July 16th. The Pinty’s Delicious Foods 358 Modifieds will be featured once again in the Jerry Winger Memorial that in 2016 will be 65 laps in distance.

“”While the main event will be 65 laps … it’s unique format will have it divided into 2 20 lap segments followed by a 25 finale,” revealed (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell-Jones, “our drivers are surely planning their strategies now for what should be an exciting celebration for our fans … if one driver can win all three segments – there’s a $2500 Bonus courtesy of Bicknell Racing Products’ Bob Slack.”

The Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series program will also feature the Yager Bros Trucking Sportsman, Rev’s Full Throttle Powersports Modified Lites and the Van Raine Construction 4 Cylinder Divisions in addition to Vintage Race Cars.

“We really like helping build things big and small, “said (Welland’s GM) Jake den Hollander, “away from the track we share the same passion as any race team – we’re here to get the job done – and we can’t wait to see who gets it done July 16th”

Drivers will draw for heat starting spots for the 65 lap Jerry Winger Memorial and depending on the car count, the top 10 or 12 from the heats will redraw for starting spots in the first 20 lap segment.

The winner of the first and second 20 lap segments will redraw to see if 8, 10 or 12 cars will be inverted for the next segment.

Points will be tabulated from the finishes of the first two segments to help line up the final 25 segment – ie finish 1st and 4th and you will have 5 points. Another unique twist – the points will be lined up from lowest to highest. Prior to the start of the 25 lap finale … a final invert draw of either 8, 10 or 12 cars will set the final starting order.

Any ties in points in the first two segments will be broken by lowest heat draw numbers.

The winner of the third segment will win the Jerry Winger Memorial Trophy.

The Jerry Winger Memorial dates back to the 1959 Season when it was established after an up and coming racer and Point Champion Jerry Winger passed away due to illness.

George Winger was the first winner and in the modern era of the annual award – former winners Pete Bicknell, Chad Brachmann, Mike Bowman and Tyler McPherson are all winners in 2016.

Going back to July 2nd, 2001 … Robbie Krull won the first 50 lap segment while the final two segments were won by Danny Johnson.
