BRIGHTON, ONT –  Brighton Speedway’s biggest event of the year, the Part Source Applefest Shootout, kicked off on Friday evening with 138 cars signed in across seven divisions. The night was highlighted by the 50-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified race in what was the series’ only visit of the season.

Lindberg Comes From Behind

Gary Lindberg was in for an uphill battle after he drew the 11th starting position for the annual 50-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified race but he was up to the challenge. The Ridgeway, Ontario native took the lead on lap 42, passing Ryan Scott (No. 33) who had led every lap to that point in the race.

The race got off to a rough start with early cautions and a red flag in the large 27-car field. Polesitter Scott did not let those early wrecks faze him as he held off Justin Sharp (No. 8s) for the opening 21 laps. But on lap 22, Sharp spun into the infield and Lindberg took over the second-place position. For the next 20 laps, Lindberg and Scott duked it out in side-by-side edge of your seat racing. Lindberg eventually took the race, using the high side of the racetrack to pick up his second win in as many years at the Brighton Speedway.

Sopaz Snatches Third Win

Kyle Sopaz (No. 12) started on the pole for the 30-lap Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Model feature but it was second-place starter Phil Potts (No. 29) leading the first lap. Potts led the first 15 laps of the double points feature but early cautions prevented him from establishing a big lead.

On lap 16, Sopaz took back first-place, while Potts found himself battling for second with Steve Baldwin (No. 5). While Potts and Baldwin battled, Sopaz extended his lead and without a late caution to tighten the field, he took the checkered flag a full 2 seconds ahead of the field, picking up his third win of the year.

Anderson and Ramsay Duel Again

Double points night for the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock division saw another fantastic battle between Doug Anderson (No. 72) and point leader Justin Ramsay (No. 03). The two rivals found each other side-by-side once again coming out of a lap 3 caution and they did not relent over the last 17 laps. The combaters clashed on lap 9, bringing out a caution, but both got their spots back as it was ruled the yellow flag was a result of deteriorated track conditions.

The two drivers did not let that near miss affect them the rest of the way. In the end, Anderson was able to use the high side of the speedway to hold off Ramsay for his fifth victory of the season.

Eight is Great for French

Tyler French (No. 0) was a man on a mission Friday night. French came into the evening trailing Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division leader Shelby Mills (No. 78) by 80 points. But on double points night, French was given the opportunity to make up that gap. Starting on the front row beside Bella Cosstick (No. 24), French did not waste any time, jumping out to the lead on lap 1. But Mills was not going to let French run away with the victory. The Brighton native soon passed Cosstick for second but was unable to catch French by the end of the 15-lap feature. For French it was his eighth victory of the year.

Comeau Snares Vintage Win

The Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club had a great turnout as 17 cars checked in for the 15-lap feature. Steve Arbuthnot (No. 70) and Pete Stapper (No. 28) brought the field to life and battled for the lead for the first several laps of the race. Brian Comeau (No. 73) challenged the front row early on but was unable to make a pass. But Comeau persisted and was finally able to get around both of them on lap 14, just in time to pick up the victory.

Fletcher Fetches First Win

David Lemon (No. 27) and Geoffrey York (No. 33) brought the field to green for the start of the 12-lap feature but by the middle of the race both had faded to the back of the 14-car field. By lap 7, point leader Andy Fletcher (No 42) had taken the lead. Not even a late caution could slow Fletcher down as he picked up his first victory of the season.

Evans Picks Up Win Number One

Tom Cole (No. 6) started on the front row alongside Ken Evans (No. 00) but was not able to hold onto his advantageous position. Evans on the other hand shot out in front of the field, leading lap one. Without a caution to slow him down, Evans cruised to his first victory of the year.
