SAN DIEGO—While deservedly grabbing the majority of the headlines will be the six-way race for the season title in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for 850-horsepower high-tech, unlimited production trucks, next week’s iconic 46th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race will also include everyman racers from across the U.S. and around the world along with nearly three dozen cross-over racers from other motorsports disciplines as well as business leaders and entertainers.
This year’s legendary desert classic, the final event of the 2013 SCORE Desert Series, will be held next week in Mexico on a brutally-rugged 883.00-mile SCORE signature desert race course.
With the rugged course traveling on both sides of the peninsula, the world’s most famous desert race will start and finish in Ensenada, Baja California Norte. It is the longest course in race history for a loop race, starting and finish in the same location.
This year will mark the 39th time in the first 45 years of the storied race that it has started in Ensenada and it will be the 22nd time it has finished in Ensenada as well.
It’s the oldest and most well known of all desert races, and it remains as the single most appealing accomplishment to a driver. Since 1967, the mother of all desert races has been run over the mysterious and majestic Baja California peninsula.
This race not only culminates the 2013 SCORE Desert Series, but concludes the celebration of the 40th anniversary of SCORE International, the world’s foremost desert racing organization.
When the green flag drops next Thursday night for motorcycles and ATVs and next Friday morning for cars and trucks, the growing starting grid for the upcoming 46th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will include 91 racers who have combined for 311 class wins in the granddaddy of all desert races.

THEY’VE ALL BEEN THERE
The famous and not-so-famous have tried their hand at conquering the Baja and they have come from all walks of life. Mark Thatcher, son of Great Britain’s then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher, raced in the 1982 SCORE Baja 1000. Celebrities James Garner, Ted Nugent and the late Steve McQueen all battled the Baja in the early 1970s and many racers from other forms of motorsports have crossed over to try their skills.

The late Academy Award winning actor, racer and race team owner Paul Newman raced in the 2004 event. Jesse James, of ‘Monster Garage’ fame, and Hollywood film and TV star Patrick Dempsey have both raced in this classic several times in the last 15 years.
HALL-MARKS ALL OVER BAJA
This year’s race will commemorate the achievements of legendary desert racers like Rod Hall, Ron Bishop, Johnny Johnson, and Larry Roeseler. Hall, who will turn 76 on Nov. 22, has a record 22 class wins (including one overall win in 1972), and is the only racer who has competed in all 45 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Bishop is the only racer who competed in the first 40 SCORE Baja 1000 races all on a motorcycle.
Hall will be racing this year in the Stock Mini class with his granddaughter Shelby Hall and Damien Michelin as he attempts to add to his untouchable legacy. This same trio gave the elder Hall his 22nd class win in 2012.
Roeseler, has won 17 times in this race, including 13 overall wins (10 on a motorcycle). Roeseler will share driving duties this year in SCORE Trophy Truck with Tim Herbst in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150. Roeseler won the unlimited Class 1 for four consecutive years (2004-2007), driving with the youngest of the three racing brothers, Troy Herbst, in the Smithbuilt-Ford open-wheel desert race car that was known as the ‘Land Shark’. Roeseler is the only racer in the history of the event to win the overall 4-wheel in a truck and also in a car as well as the overall 2-wheel title as well.
In 2008, Roeseler split the driving with driver of record and team owner and now SCORE owner Roger Norman when they were the overall 4-wheel and SCORE Trophy Truck champions and the pair was second in 2009. In 2010, Roger Norman drove solo the length of the peninsula and finished third overall. Roeseler is racing this year with Tim Herbst in the No. 19 SCORE Trophy Truck.
Now retired from racing, Bishop is the only racer who competed every year of the first 40 on a motorcycle. Also retired from racing, Johnson, had 15 class wins, amazingly in eight different classes.
GLOBAL IMPRESSIONS
To date, in addition to 34 U.S. States and the U.S. Territory of Guam, racers have entered fromArgentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan and Uruguay. With a week before the green flag drops on Thursday night, Nov. 14, late entries will be accepted up to the start of the race for each group.
SCORE FIRSTS
Completing his first year as the new owner of SCORE International, based in Reno, Nev., Roger Norman has announced a first for SCORE as all Pro motorcycle, Pro ATV and Sportsman Motorcycle and Sportsman ATV classes will start on Thursday night, Nov. 14 at 11 p.m. with all the car and truck classes starting at approximately 9 a.m. Friday morning, Nov. 15 in the elapsed-time race where each vehicle will leave in various intervals.
This month’s race will cover much of Mexico’s majestic Baja California Norte portion of the peninsula, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California. Upwards of 300 entries, from nearly 25 countries and 40 U.S. States, competing in 42 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, truck, motorcycles and ATVs are expected to compete in this year’s international challenge.
As the World Series is to baseball and the Super Bowl to football, the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 stands as tall at the pinnacle of the motorsports world today as it did when it began 45 years ago.
Norman has also announced that for the first time in race history, there will be qualifying for start position for several classes. Held on Wednesday and not open to the public because of safety concerns, qualifying will be held for SCORE Trophy and the unlimited Class 1, by class along with all Pro Motorcycle and Pro ATV classes with each division grouped together. It will be held outside of Ensenada on a location that doesn’t include the race course.

Live pre-race and race days internet coverage produced by the SCORE Dirt LiveHD team will be airing on www.score-international.com. This race will also debut SCORE’s new tracking system that will be accessed through the SCORE website. On-site in the start/finish line area, fans will be able to enjoy the live coverage of the race displayed on SCOREvision, SCORE’s new huge LED screen.

SCORE IRONMAN CLASS
This race will mark the debut of the SCORE Ironman class, where eight Pro motorcycle entries to date will compete against each other and the clock as they attempt to complete the entire course under the time limit while riding solo. To date, a total of eight racers, have entered the class with the intent to ride the entire race solo in their quests for the SCORE Ironman awards.

Iconic GRAHAM-Watchmaker of Switzerland, has returned as the Official Timekeeper of SCORE International. GRAHAM has designed and produced for the second year a high-end SCORE Baja 1000 collector’s timepiece that will also be one of two unique and special awards to be presented to the overall winners of the race. One of the unique collectible timepieces will be awarded to each of the three overall race division winners—the overall 4-wheel vehicle, motorcycle and ATV champions at this year’s granddaddy of all desert races.
In addition to the once-in-a-lifetime GRAHAM SCORE Baja 1000 timepieces, the overall champions in the race will also receive, like they have for over 20 years from SCORE, the specially-designed bronze statue of Cuauhtémoc, the last of 11 Aztec emperors from early Mexican history, one of the most revered figures in the history of the country.

In addition to season class point championships and World Championship titles, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. There are also the numerous annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year Awards. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also attempting to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the race season. With 44 racers still in the hunt, these awards are being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 28th consecutive year.

While entries will be accepted up to just prior to the start of the race, as many as 50 late entries are expected during race week in Ensenada.
The car and truck classes with the most entries to date are SCORE Trophy Truck (31), Class 10 (20), Class 19 (19), Class 1 (15), and Class 1/2-1600 (11).
Among the motorcycle and ATV classes, Class 30 for motorcycles for riders over 30 years old has the most entries to date with 12.
