MARK KIEL’S “BLAST FROM THE PAST”

KLIM’S COW TAG OFF-ROAD RIDE

KLIM is an apparel company known as passionate off-roaders (and snowmobilers!) and they recently staged their first annual Cow Tag Off- Road ride at Idaho’s Big Hole Mountain trail system. The event was targeted to help support trail advocacy groups, including the Blue Ribbon Coalition. Rather than just have a show up and ride the trails event, the Cow Tag used a unique format had riders earning points for finding cow tags that were spread out over several miles of a monumental trail system. The tags located the farthest out, or were harder to navigate due to the trails toughness earned extra points that went towards raffle tickets. The event ended with a huge amount of prizes from KLIM and other industry partners. The bike prize at the end of the day was raffling of Cody Webb’s 2015 Super Enduro winning KTM 300XC.

The entire trail system was laid out on a map showing the difficulty of the trails and the location of the Cow Tags. This allowed you to ride with your buddies and pick trails that meet your own abilities. 160 riders were accepted and all were challenged, with both Cody Webb and Ty Tremaine talking about the toughness of the trails and the incredible views that you got at trails above the tree line.

Webb was also on hand to pick the raffle winner of his 2015 SuperEnduro KTM 300 XC. The Cow Tag participants got entries and people were also able to enter the raffle online. Mike Anderson from Ridgemont, Ohio, was the lucky winner. The proceeds from the raffle went to the Blue Ribbon Coalition/www. sharetrails.org.

Dirt Bike’s Tom Webb made the trek, got the Klim tour and two days of great riding in Klim’s backyard.

RIDE ENGINEERING DAMPING CONES

Ride Engineering introduces their Polyurethane Cone Inserts in two (2) compounds; Soft and Firm.  Used in conjunction with our Bar Mounts and/or Triple Clamps, these inserts help dampen track vibration from the handlebars to the rider.

The softer compound (yellow) absorbs more chatter and creates a pillow like feel. Highly recommended for Vet riders and people with delicate wrists. These must be used with our One-Piece Anti-Twist Bar mount ($99.95 MSRP) to keep everything straight in the event of a fall.  The red compound is firmer but still dampens vibration and impacts. Recommended for the serious racer who doesn’t take chances with DNFs. Stay in control with Triple Clamps and Bar Mounts from Ride Engineering; available with your choice of dampening inserts for most models: Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, KTM and Husky. With easy installation, these Cone Inserts fit all Ride clamps and most OEM applications.

DIRTWISE/MAXXIS/KLIM TEAM RACE REPORT – GNCC Rd. 9

DirtWise/Maxxis/KLIM Race team rider Jason Thomas continued his run to the 2015 GNCC XC2 Pro Championship, with a great 1st place finish at Round 9 of the GNCC series, held over the weekend in West Virginia.

Thomas impressed all by steadily moving forward all race long following a few mistakes incurred early in the race that dropped him out of the lead position. “Well, that was a great race out there and I’m so stoked to take the win in the last race before the summer break. I made a few mistakes in the mid part of the race but then redeemed myself with a few solid laps at the end which let me rip back into the lead and take victory!!!”

Thomas now has a healthy 64 point lead in the Championship standings.

FIGHT FIRES AND KEEP TRAILS OPEN!

Dear OHV Interest,

With wildfires burning throughout the West, I thought you might like to read about

FireScape Mendocino’s recent workshop in Covelo.

As you know, intense wildfires can have a great impact on both dispersed and developed OHV recreation.  Often times, those out-of-control fires (and/or the initial attack by dozers) destroy trail structures.  Afterwards, the area will be impacted by blowdown for years to come.

I believe that collaborative planning efforts that include OHV, conservationists, FS, BLM, environmental groups, local business/community leaders, and timber can play an important role on finding (and supporting) forest health projects that might reduce the severity of wildland fires.

TRAIL TIPS

OK, here’s how I fix a broken KTM lever so I have a good spare for my butt bag.

By Mental

-First I cut the end off flush so I have a good flat surface to work with

-I use a #40 bit to start the hole and set it up to 5/32 drill.

-Then you can use a 5/32 cotter pin or a roll pin your choice and ram it in the hole!!

– I use a little Water Weld on then end of the roll pin or cotter pin and mold it onto the end of the lever. Then mix up some more Water Weld to make the lever end, this not rocket science so do the best you can and let it set up 1 or 2 hours is good.

-Using a couple different files, just start working  the lever to get the right shape you want, I used an air motor and a with a rotary file to shape this lever.

See ya mental!!!!

MENTAL’S TOE

My good buddy Mark “Mental” Mangold went up to the Klim Cow Tag ride in Idaho, and thankfully took my Husky FE350 along for me to ride. We got invited to a special ‘invite only’ ride prior to the event and Mental made it just past the first fire road and into the woods (approximately 1.4 miles) when he clipped a rock in the very first single track of the journey. The results were not good and he rode no more.
