When moving from Windows to Mac, a lot of people who use Outlook to manage their communication and information face the tough choice, leave their data behind or not to switch over altogether. MS outlook uses the PST file format (Personal Storage Table) to store messages and all the other associated data. Although PST format can be accessed and migrated directly and relatively easily to Outlook for Mac, Apple’s Mail is another story. Apple’s Mail uses one of the most popular UNIX based MBOX format and is not able to read PST file format of the Outlook for windows.
Don’t lose heart there are a couple of ways to accomplish this. The first method involves importing the PST files into outlook for Mac; of course you would need a copy of outlook for mac to accomplish this. If you do not have a copy of Outlook on you and do not wish to spend on office for Mac you can always download the 30 day free trial. If you have an existing installation, launch outlook, under the File menu > chose the Import option, select the Outlook Data File (.pst or .olm) option , click Next, select Outlook for Windows Data File (.pst) option, click Next, browse to the location of the .pst file you’ve imported from your windows system, select the PST file, and click Import. As mentioned earlier all the messages will be imported into Outlook for Mac. Now locate the converted file OLM (once imported the PST files are converted into OLM) and Drag the folder containing the OLM files to the desktop. This will automatically convert the OLM file into an MBOX. As mentioned earlier MBOX can be directly imported into Apple Mail.
If all this sounds like a hassle (and yes, it can be a bit of bother, but hey, it’s for free so ….!), you can go for Digital Tweaks Apple mail import tool a dedicated utility to take care of the Import Outlook Mail to Mac Mail. All you got to do is select the PST file you are looking to import from Outlook Mail to Mac Mail, choose what you want to convert (Mailbox\Mailboxes, folders contacts and calendars), select the desired output format > Start. The utility will covert outlook mail to mac mail, hereon you would be able to save the converted data to the desired location.
Once the data has been converted and saved at your desired location, launch Apple Mail, under the File menu > select Import option, select File the input format as mbox , click Continue, browse to the location of the file that Apple mail import tool had converted from PST to Mbox , select the Mbox file . The messages along with all the associated data (email attachments; Message format Read/unread status, address book contacts, calendar an so on) will be imported and can be found under the On My Mac heading within an Import folder.
