Over the past few months, coders and graphical user interface (GUI) specialists across the country have been hard at work writing an AI program that can creatively outsmart and outsurvive their opponents, where they stand to win a share of R200 000 cash. This is all part of the annual Entelect Challenge (formerly known as the ‘Entelect 100K Challenge’) which has been designed to test the creativity and programming skills of entrants, and has been open to contestants of all levels including students, novice coders and professional developers.

On Saturday 17 September 2016, entrants went head to head in the Entelect Challenge playoff at The Venue Greenpark, where eight bots came out tops. These finalists will have their bots battling it out for that top spot and epic cash prizes on Saturday 8 October 2016 on the main stage at rAge at 11:00.

Prize money will be awarded to the top eight performing bots competing in the AI Challenge (with the top three getting R70 000, R35 000 and R25 000 respectively) which takes place at rAge on 8 October 2016.

For those who were more interested in building a GUI than entering the AI arena, the Entelect Challenge also offered a GUI specific competition. GUI specialists or hobbyists entered the Gooey Award challenge, to build their own graphical user interface for the game. Contestants were judged on: presentation; game world; game theme; and fun factor. The winner of the Gooey Award for 2016 was Ruan Moolman, and he walked away with R15 000.

The theme of the 2016 challenge centred around the classic 1980’s strategy maze-based game, Bomberman – with a twist. Multiple players will be abandoned in a maze arena, armed with bombs, wit and the desire to be the best. Their goal – to outlast their opponents to be the last one standing. Taking advantage of various power-ups, players must explore the dark corners of the maze to accumulate points by bombing everything and everyone in their path. In the end, the surviving player with the most points will be victorious!

This year’s Challenge catered for and provided sample bots for the following languages: C++, C#, F#, Java, Node.JS and Python, whilst the reference bot was coded in C#. Players had to first register on the website http://challenge.entelect.co.za/ through the Player portal – which was a new feature in 2016. The Player Portal allowed players to build and submit their bots against reference bots, and they were able to visualise the matches using their own visualiser before submitting.
