Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a city full of history. It served as one of the capitals during the Revolutionary War and was once again the capital city while Washington, D.C. was being built.

Philadelphia certainly has it all from the arts to food to history, but Pennsylvania is a big state perfect for a summer road trip. Spend a few days in Philly exploring Independence Hall and the famous Liberty Bell. After an early morning of following in Rocky’s steps, spend the afternoon cheering on the Phillies. Don’t forget to try the infamous Philly Cheesesteak at Pat’s King of Steaks.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

For the Late Arrival

Late night flight? If you arrived during the night, skip the taxi ride into the city and opt for the free airport shuttle to the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Philadelphia Airport. The hotel is located near the Eagle’s Lincoln Financial Field and about 10 miles from downtown Philly. The rooms are comfy and come with deluxe toiletries. The coffee is always flowing in the lobby and the breakfast is free.

Suites-Only Living

Interested in a little luxury near the airport? Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport offers only suites to its guests. Rooms are large and offer Sheraton’s signature Sweet Sleeper beds. Each room contains a personal wet bar and big screen TV with premium channels. Wake up early and hit the state-of-the-art hotel gym for a little sweat session before heading downtown.

Feel the Drama

If you want to stay in the heart of the city near the art museums and the Liberty Bell, the Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City is a great hotel. It’s a short walking distance to everything you want to see. Each room is equipped with comfy beds, free Wi-Fi, and even PlayStations. Make sure you check in with the concierge to see what is playing at the nearby Merriam Theater.

After a few days in Philly, head northwest through Lancaster and Harrisburg for more history and fine Amish goods. You’ll want to spend a day or two in State College, home to Penn State. While State College is primarily a college town, it is home to a five-day festival of arts in July. Of course, you don’t want to miss a game at Beaver Stadium.

Where to Stay in College Town

For Die-Hard Lions Fans

Are you a big college football fan? Then you obviously have to stay at the appropriately named Nittany Lion Inn Hotel. The Nittany Lion Inn Hotel is a great mid-range hotel with every modern touch you need, like iPod docking stations, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and Keurig coffee machines in every room. The complimentary shuttle will run you all around town from 5am to midnight daily. Go Lions!

You can’t go to Pennsylvania and not go to Pittsburgh. Philadelphia was built by the Founding Fathers, but Pittsburgh arose from the coal mines and steel plants. Pittsburgh might be a little rough around the edges, but it’s the birthplace of many technological advances during the Industrial Revolution.

Where to Stay in Pittsburgh

Near the Airport

The Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport Hotel is a great hotel just a stone’s throw away from the busy airport. Early flight back home? Take the complimentary airport shuttle. Before you go make sure you relax in the hotel’s heated pool and spa. You’ll sleep great afterwards in the soundproof rooms.

Pennsylvania is a large state with much to offer from history-rich cities to small college towns. Hop in your car and take the scenic route through the farmlands from city to city.
