The prices of most vegetables, gram and sugar increased on the retail markets in the city over the week ending Friday. Traders said that the supply of the items was available in the kitchen markets but the prices went up due to increased demand.

The prices of most vegetables increased by Tk 5-Tk 10 a kg over the week.

The price of aubergine increased to Tk 40 a kg from Tk 30 a kg, bitter gourd to Tk 40 a kg from Tk 30 a kg, cucumber to Tk 30 a kg from Tk 25 a kg, papaya to Tk 40 a kg from Tk 30 a kg, carrot to Tk 60 a kg from Tk 50 a kg and tomato to Tk 50 a kg from Tk 40 a kg over the week.

The prices of okra, ribbed gourd, sponge gourd, teasle gourd, snake gourd and palwal remained unchanged and the items were selling at Tk 30 a kg, Tk 40 a kg, Tk 35 a kg, Tk 50 a kg, Tk 40 a kg and Tk 30 a kg respectively on Friday.

Green chilli price remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 60-Tk 70 a kg on Friday.

Shahidul Islam, a vendor at Rampura kitchen market, told New Age on Friday that the prices of vegetables increased a bit over the week due to increasing demand as consumers were buying more vegetables amid sultry weather.

The supply of vegetables is available in the market but wholesalers charging extra money, he said.

The price of gram increased by Tk 5 a kg over the week and the item was retailing at Tk 55-Tk 60 a kg.

The price of sugar increased by Tk 3 a kg in last three days and the item was retailing at Tk 48-Tk 51a kg.

Mizanur Rahman, a trader at Karwan Bazaar, said the price of gram had been increasing gradually on the wholesale market for the last few days as the demand of the item increased as the fasting month of Ramadan was approaching.

Consumers have started to buy gram for Ramadan which has created a pressure on the stock of the item, he said.

Mizanur said the price of sugar went up on the retail market as refiners increased the price of the item by Tk 100 a bag (50 kg) in last four days.

The prices of palm and super palm oil decreased by Tk 3 a litre and the items were selling at Tk 78-Tk 82 a litre and Tk 83-Tk 85 a litre on Friday.

Bottled soya bean oil price, however, decreased by Tk 5 and it was selling at Tk 550-Tk 560 a five-litre container.

Unpacked soya bean oil was retailing at Tk 108-Tk 112 a kg on the day.

The price of onion remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 35 a kg over the week while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 28-Tk 30 a kg.

Potato price remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 18-Tk 20 a kg on Friday.

The price of egg remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 28 a hali (four pieces) over the week.

The price of garlic remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 80 a kg on Friday.

Ginger price remained high and the imported ginger was selling at Tk 220-Tk 240 a kg on Friday.

Fish prices also remained stable over the week.

Rohita was selling at Tk 180-Tk 300 a kg on Friday, pangas at Tk 120-Tk 150 a kg and tilapia at Tk 150-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.

The price of broiler remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 140-Tk 150 a kg on Friday.

The prices of mutton and beef remained stable over the week.

Mutton was selling at Tk 420-Tk 450 a kg while beef was selling at Tk 270-Tk 280 a kg.

The fine varieties of miniket were selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg while the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg on Friday.

The fine varieties of BR-28 were selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 a kg and the coarse varieties of parija were selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg.
