The door is opening a little more to the pathway for citizenship that is hoping to be paved further by the vote of legislation. Today, the Senate cast a vote of 82-15 to advance the landmark immigration bill put together by the “Gang of Eight”. President Barack Obama has made the bill one of his top priorities so far and it seems as though if things keep going the way they are and the President keeps pushing for congress to finish the bill by the end of summer, many illegal immigrants might actually have a chance to start their “path to citizenship” a lot sooner than initially expected. The bill proposes a 13 year path in which illegal immigrants will have to follow strict policies and procedures to becoming permanent legal American citizens. President Obama released a very outgoing statement Tuesday while surrounded by religious leaders, advocates for immigration reform, and law enforcement officials saying, “Congress needs to act and that moment is now. There’s no reason Congress can’t get this done by the end of summer.” He went on to say that there cannot be any good reason why Congress is pushing to play “procedural games” or “engage in obstructions” in which he calls this reform the best chance that we’ve had in a very long time to address this problem. President Obama stated that he truly believes that there is a solution to pass the bill to where it can be fair to middle class families, legal immigrants, and business owners. If the measure is passed it would certainly gain a boost in border security as well as workplace enforcement. The three major issues of concern in which is being said to be the cause of the hold up in the passage of the bill is the fact that no one can seem to come to an agreement on: border security, back taxes, and health coverage. Without assurance the president seems encouraged enough that a bill will soon come to light and many of the still 11 million immigrants in the United States will be able to soon begin their 13 year path to stay in the country in which they live, work, have grown up, and enjoy making a life.
