FARMERS BRANCH (CBS11) – He shot 17 under par, but it still wasn’t enough for hometown hero Jordan Spieth to claim his third major this year. He may not have come out on top Sunday, but that didn’t matter to his biggest fans who’ve been rooting for him since he was a kid.
Anyone can be a fair weather fan, but the people who watched Jordan Spieth as a child get his start at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch will always be behind him no matter what.
Like a lot of Brookhaven members Carol Brunworth takes special pride in Jordan Spieth’s success.
“We’re just excited because he’s a hometown boy, and he grew up here. He took all his lessons here, and he’s done good,” Brunworth said as she watched with a group at Brookhaven’s 55 restaurant.
“For us as members here at Brookhaven, you know you’re on the edge of the seat, and you’re biting your nails, and you’re just praying and hoping so much he can do this,” Brookhaven member Donna Hartwig said.
Hartwig can remember Spieth as a boy when she says he was already an intense player eager to learn the game.
“And now watching him, he’s like your child, you know, you just, you’re so proud of him and what he’s become because you’ve seen it when he was young,” Hartwig said.
As the PGA Championship went on, it was clear Jason Day would be hard to beat.
Walter Hubbell says no matter what happens in any particular tournament, the Brookhaven family will be there to support its favorite son.
“He’s living up to the potential that everybody saw in him when he was 13 years old hitting the ball around, and that’s what’s amazing,” Hubbell said.
And even though Spieth’s performance Sunday wasn’t enough to win the PGA Championship, it was enough to raise his ranking to number one in the world.
