2013-11-20

A very active weather pattern is setting up across North Texas for the next several days into next week.

First a strong Arctic Cold Front will arrive Thursday night plunging temperatures into the 30s on Friday.  And we will stay pretty much in the 30s and maybe low 40s this entire weekend.

TONIGHT

Clouds will increase and temps stay in the 60s.  Spotty showers will develop late this evening and continue overnight.

THURSDAY

Cold front will arrive Thursday night.  Before it gets here temperatures will be quite mild in the mid 70s Thursday afternoon.  There will be scattered showers maybe even an isolated thunderstorm with us during the day on Thursday.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Cold front arrives with showers and isolated thunderstorms possible Thursday night.

FRIDAY

Temperatures will fall quickly into the 30s during the morning on Friday and will likely stay in the 30s all day.  There will the chance of some light freezing rain in western sections of North Texas (see map below)

FRIDAY MORNING

FRIDAY AFTERNOON / EVENING - There is the potential that the precip could be heavier in the afternoon/evening on Friday.  This could create more of an icing concern in the western sections of North Texas on Friday.

WHAT TO EXPECT FRIDAY INTO FRIDAY NIGHT

SATURDAY

Rain chances will continue Friday night into the day on Saturday.  Rain coverage will taper off as we go thru the day on Saturday, but temperatures stay cold.  There could be light freezing rain in our western counties again

Saturday morning.

SATURDAY MORNING

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY

Precipitation should end for Saturday night into most of Sunday.  Temperatures will remain cold in the 30s and 40s all day Sunday.

SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY

Precipitation picks back up.  This is the time frame where we have the greatest chance of seeing wintry precipitation in the DFW area.  We would likely see a mixture of sleet and rain in DFW Sunday night into Monday morning.  The impact of that sleet may create slick spots on elevated surfaces for the Monday morning commute.  If the precipitation was heavier and temperatures colder there could be a more significant impact for Monday morning.

Below is a look at the areas where I expect wintry precipitation Sunday night into Monday morning.

WHAT TO EXPECT SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY

Right now I can guarantee you it will be cold Friday thru the weekend.  My confidence is high that we will have mainly rain in the DFW area all day Friday into Friday night.  I have a moderate to high confidence that western areas of North Texas will see at least light freezing rain at times Friday into Friday night.  The impact from that freezing rain is a little more uncertain.  That will depend more on the intensity of the rain and how cold temperatures are.

I also have moderate to high confidence that we will see wintry weather Sunday night into Monday morning across most of North Texas.  Again though, the impact from that wintry weather will be determined by the intensity of the precipitation and the temperatures.  But at least some impact will be felt Sunday night into Monday morning.
