NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Do you have any old or expired drugs in your medicine cabinet? This weekend you’ll have the chance to dispose of them safely.
Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The take-back program is meant to gather expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines to reduce the risk of abuse, poisoning, and pollution. Often patients flush unwanted medication down the toilet and the prescription drugs wind up in the water system.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or the direction of a doctor.
Statistically DEA research has shown that non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America.
The drug take back policy is simple — anyone can anonymously drop off any medication at locations across North Texas. Only liquids and syringes won’t be accepted.
The program accepts all controlled and non-controlled medications, veterinary medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. All of the medication gathered will be safely and properly destroyed.
All of the drug take back locations will be open on October 26, 2013, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Click here to find a collection site near you.
