That’s important, of course, since you’ll need to assess if his/her style is right for you. But apart from checking out their portfolios, here are five important things you may forget to look out for when choosing your wedding makeup artist. You’ll be spending a significant amount of time with your makeup artist possibly for your pre-wedding photo-shoot and on the big day itself, so it’s important that you get along with your artist.
Ensure that you feel relaxed and at ease with your makeup artist, whether it’s on a personal level or professional level. Your artist should be flexible and open to new ideas. Both of you should feel comfortable discussing looks or styles to try, and be able to reach a consensus amicably.
If you’re one to freak out at events, it’s nice to have someone to help calm your nerves as you go through your major milestones for the day.
2. Find out their sanitisation habits

You should be able to see how well the makeup artist keeps their products and sanitise their beauty tools. Ensure that the artist uses disposables, wherever possible, such as mascara wands and sponges, and uses only clean brushes.
Mascara should be applied using disposable brushes while creams should be scooped out onto a palette before application. Stay clear of the artist if you see him/her double dipping or using a universal mascara wand. The last thing you want on your big day is a full-on acne breakout or an eye infection.
3. Check if your artist has other commitments on your wedding day

Do not be mistaken, it’s perfectly fine for your artist to have other events scheduled on the same day. However, it’s always good to have a rough idea of his/her commitments that day so you may ensure that he/she has sufficient time to complete your makeup and/or hair.
4. Understand the products your artist will be using on you

Most beauty professionals have big beauty arsenals. Make sure that the items that they use are suitable for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, you definitely wouldn’t want to have products laden with synthetic fragrances or sulfates smeared all over your face, would you? Similarly, if shine is your greatest enemy, inform your artist so she’ll know the types of products to steer clear of.

It happens. Emergencies don’t ever come with warnings. Ask if your artist has any contingency plans, should anything crop up on your big day. Any artist worth booking would typically have a back-up plan. If your artist suggests a back-up fill in, do request to meet him/her before the wedding, just so you can be more familiar with the potential replacement.
