While most of us invest time and money into our skincare routine, how many of us can profess to spend the same amount effort to take care of our body skin?

If your resolutions for 2017 include achieving flawless, glowing body skin, then read on to find out how you can treat it better by applying the same theories of skincare: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise and sun care.

1. Cleanse

Just like your facial skincare routine, the cleansing step is the first and most important step of caring for your body skin. Pick a body cleanser that removes impurities thoroughly but gently. If you have sensitive skin, instead of sharing the same shower gel as every one else in the family, choose one that agrees better with your skin.

Try: Earth Life Organics Shower Gel (SGD16.90). This organic shower gel is made from a base of coconut oil, enriched with botanical ingredients that are rich in oxidants and vitamin E. Delivering a refreshing sensation, this shower gel also helps improve skin texture. It is available in six different scents and our favourite is the Green Fields (green tea scented).

2. Exfoliate

Remove the top layer of dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of your skin. A body scrub is able to slough off this layer to reveal new skin that looks more radiant. Besides this, regular exfoliation can also ensure that your skin has better capacity to absorb the goodness of other products you use afterwards.

Try: Estelle & Thild Spring Rose Blonde Body Scrub (SGD35). This bestseller from Estelle & Thild is an organic body polish that gently lifts away dead cells and priming the skin so it can receive hydration for silkier skin. It is formulated with shea butter and granulated sugar and is to be massaged onto damp skin.

DV Tip: If you have irritated skin, consider alleviating it with a soothing cream before you do any form of exfoliation. Consider using a product like Ice Cream from Strip. Recommended for those who have delicate skin after waxing and IPL treatments, this contains natural licorice extract and is also great for soothing inflammation, sun-exposed skin, and even insect bites.

3. Moisturise

Seal in the moisture and nourish your skin with a moisturiser that feels hydrating. Choose a non-greasy formula that feels comfortable in Singapore’s humid weather so you’ll feel encouraged to use your body moisturiser regularly.

Try: Nivea Skin Delight Oil In Body Milk (SGD7.90 for 250ml and SGD10.90 for 400ml). A body oil is more nourishing and a body milk feels more comfortable, but this product gives you the best of both worlds. This mild body moisturiser nourishes skin with a glycerin-based formula that is nutrient-rich and soothing. It is available in two scents: Glowing Rose and Relaxing Lavender.

4. Sun care

Like your facial skin, your body skin is also subjected to signs of ageing and pigmentation if you don’t use sunscreen on it faithfully. Pick a sunscreen that feels lightweight so you’ll be encouraged to apply and reapply. It also shouldn’t leave any nasty stain on clothes.

Try: La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF50+ Extreme Body Fluid (SGD49.90). While it provides high level of UVA and UVB protection, this body sunscreen has a non-sticky texture that feels refreshing and light so it’s very comfortable to wear. Its water resistant formula also makes it a good product to bring along for water activities.
