Rose gold hair had its moment of fame, so did rainbow highlighters. When it comes to beauty trends involving unusual colours, it is the time for unorthodox lip colours to shine.
When we saw that Make Up For Ever’s newly launched Artist Rouge collection features a dark blue shade as its signature colour, Urban Decay’s 100 shades of Vice Lipsticks included a black lipstick, and celebrities like Rihanna and Amber Rose were seen sporting green lip colour, we knew that it’s time we go crazy with ours.
To see if if these colours work well on us, mere mortals, we took the plunge to put them to the test. Read on to see our review notes.
It’s easier to wear dark blue than light blue
Kristen wears Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Lipstick in Midnight Blue
We were expecting blue lipstick to look Halloween-esque but after trying it, we are definitely not dismissing the shade altogether. Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist in Midnight Blue has a very creamy texture that I loved. The blue shade also has a hint of green, and the unique shade makes lips look more multi-dimensional. Will I wear it without a costume? Certainly!
We find that dark blue is generally easier to pull off than a light blue lip colour. While the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist in Turquoise Blue looks gorgeous on the bullet and was extremely comfortable to wear, the colour just doesn’t seem to look flattering on Grace’s skin tone, and Grace finds herself struggling quite a bit with it.
On the other hand, she liked how Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Heroine, a dark blue comfort matte lipstick, looks on her and would consider wearing it out, especially for night events. Grace also likes that while this lipstick texture is matte, it doesn’t feel drying at all.

But if you really want to give light blue a shot, consider taming it down by dabbing it on to give a subtle stain, rather than to apply directly from the bullet.

You can also try creating an ombre look with by blending the light blue shade with a dark blue shade.

DV Tip: Strong and uncommon colours like blue draw attention to your lips, so if you’re planning to wear it, make sure you make your lips your best feature. Exfoliate them thoroughly and soften them with a lip balm before you apply lip colour, especially if your lipstick is matte.
Green seems to agree more with Asian skin tones

Unlike sky blue, which seems to be a challenging colour to pull off, both pale and dark green didn’t give us a huge shock. Dark green gives a mysterious vibe while pale green looks playful. If you’re considering an ombre lip look, you could mix pale green and dark green together, or green with blue for an interesting look.
DV Tip: Strong brows will really help to accentuate and “balance out” green or other stark lip colours. Go bold or go home -experiment with smoky eyes to create an overall dramatic look.
If you already like dark purple lipstick, try pale purple

Many of us may already own a purple or plum lipstick in our beauty stash. If you do, and love how purple look on you, experiment with a pale purple shade. You’ll find it easy to get used to, and it gives an alluring look that stands out from the crowd.
For a great pale purple shade, try the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Coven that Tiara wore. We like how flattering it looks on her and that it even appears to brighten up her skin tone.
Black is probably the easiest to pull off
Surprisingly, all of us agreed that black was the easiest colour to wear compared to the other ones we’ve tried. We like the edgy look without looking goth (it really depends on your overall makeup).

In fact, we passed the black lipstick around to everyone in the office to try, and we agreed that it was easy to look good wearing black lip colour. It’s probably because black is impartial to skin undertones, so it’s supposed to flatter everyone’s complexion. We would definitely recommend any one who wants to try rocking an unusual lip colour to start with black.

DV Tip: Give your black lipstick more mileage by trying this simple trick. Apply your favourite red or plum shade over black lip colour. The layering will give your red lip colour a more sultry effect.
