First, we were able to reopen the Deus Gallery and now, for the first time in 13 months, the Deus Sunday Sessions returned with an absolute rebellion of Bali bands that shook the Deus Temple to its core.
If you are going to make a comeback, you’ve got to go large and the Deus Sunday Sessions more than exploded back on the scene last Sunday night. Our first event after a year and a bit not only had a stacked lineup of seven bands and two DJ’s but its main job was to highlight a super important Bali Charity Music Event.
We’ve all been impacted by COVID, and here in Bali, where once eighty percent of the local economy relied on tourism, things have been more than extremely tough. Many people are literally struggling to survive.
One of those groups of many, is musicians, a group of people who relied completely on their weekly gigs in bars, restaurants and clubs all of which are now either closed or don’t have enough guests for the management to be able to afford ‘the luxury’ of a band.
When we were approached by the bands to host an awakening, we jumped at the chance to be able to help. All of these people were on our weekly Sunday Season roster before things closed up, bands like Rebel Warriors, The Munchies, Vana & d’Chuckle, The Bardogs, Iwanouz & the Nameks, and Noizekilla x Ras Muhamad & Di JoyFullSound. Pretty much the full force of Bali’s live music scene right there. Add to that selectas; Dewa Dull Grey & DJ Cbee and tied together by the MC extraordinaire Jonske, we almost had a house just full of musicians.
They came with their friends who also brought along their mates and it wasn’t long before the yard was chock-a-block full of assorted locals, residents as well as a slew of bar owners and other musicians, all of whom came out in force to show their support and collectively raise awareness for the Musicians of Bali’s predicament. We had an amazing night of wonderful raw rock, roll, soul, funk and reggae mixed in for good measure. Live music is a blast, isn’t it?
Some hats were passed around and some Rupiah collected on MoB’s behalf but it’s never enough.
So, we are asking you, for all of you who have seen bands in Bali before. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to have enjoyed the music at Deus on a Sunday night. Perhaps you heard live music at a bar in Kuta, Legian, or some other part of the island, it would be amazing if you could dig deep into your pocket right now and donate to the Musicians of Bali. We’ve provided a link below.
For those who do like live music, the Deus Sunday Sessions will now be back fortnightly. Check our FB Events page for details as they come to hand.
