Dat Dress

The Oscars are always the premiere event in which the hot and the chic dress to impress, but Amy Adams really must have been looking to impress someone. While her dress is pretty stunning, it’s the cut that has us all talking!

Justin the Romantic

During Justin Timberlake’s opening performance of his Oscar-nominated song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, he took the time during all of his smooth moves and sexy serenading to make his way into the audience and give a little smooch to his wife, Jessica Biel.

Meryl Streep’s Recognition

Despite Jimmy Kimmel’s tongue-in-cheek attempts at undermining Meryl Streep’s prominence and sheer talent, he ended his comedic lecture by asking those in attendance to give Streep a much-deserved standing ovation for her 20th Oscar nomination.

Gettin’ Smacked

During her moving (though slightly off) performance of the Oscar-nominated song “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana,  the 16-year-old Auli’i Cravalho was suddenly swiped by one of the background dancer’s flags. . . right before the sweeping chorus!

Makeup Joke

Jason Bateman and SNL star Kate McKinnon took to the stage to present the award for Best Hair and Makeup. Kate, ever the jokester, went on to explain that the power of makeup can be seen in a couple not getting a divorce after an argument.

Octavia LOVES Cookies

Octavia Spencer had a pretty tough time parting with her cookies that she was lucky enough to snatch, much to the chagrin of her Hidden Figures co-star Taraji Henson.

Viola Davis’s Moving Speech

Oscar speeches are known for generally being pompous and inflated, where actors say “thank you” more than they have dollars. But Viola Davis blew the room away for her acceptance speech for Best Actress, stating “I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.” She even had numerous people in tears!

Black and White

While Jimmy Kimmel’s jokes were pretty hit-and-miss for the most part, he did have a few that hit the mark. One of his best was his reference to Best Picture nominees Hidden Figures and La La Land: “In 2016, black people saved NASA, and white people saved jazz. That’s what you call progress”.

Hakuna Matata

Part of Jimmy Kimmel’s audience interaction was with Lion star Sunny Pawar. He joked with him, asking if he liked The Lion King since he was a movie titled Lion, and hoisted the 8-year-old over his head while “The Circle of Life” played throughout the theater.

Seth Rogen’s Movie Crush

Rogen’s life-long dream came true Oscar Sunday when he had the incredible opportunity to present an Oscar with the star of his favorite childhood movie, Michael J. Fox. It that wasn’t cool enough, he entered the stage from the DeLorean wearing the futuristic shoes!

John Legend-ary Performance

Keeping with the tradition of Academy Award live performances, John Legend shed his voice throughout the Dolby Theatre with his rendition of La La Land’s two nominated original songs “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)”.

Tourist Surprise

Impromptu moments in highly-scheduled productions always make an event more memorable, including the moment when Jimmy Kimmel let an unsuspecting group of tourists into the theater. After their initial bewilderment, they did what any good tourists do when they see celebrities: fill up their phone memory with pics.

Denzel Officiates Marriage

As the tourists were filing through the auditorium, Jimmy Kimmel asked an engaged couple who their favorite actor was, to which the woman promptly pointed at Denzel Washington and stated “Him!” Kimmel then jokingly asked Denzel if he would be the best man, but he did more than that. . . he joined their hands and pronounced them man and wife! “It’s Denzel, so it’s official,” Kimmel joked.

Jimmy Tweets Trump

As to be expected, the television host took several opportunities to make jokes about Trump, even wondering why he hadn’t tweeted anything about the Oscars an hour in. So he tweeted the president himself, first asking “u up?” and then playing on Meryl Streep’s opposition to him with “#MerylSaysHi”.

Historic Oscars Screwup

While the Oscars are occasionally marked with surprises, there was one unintentional surprise that made Oscars history. The card for Best Picture was switched, and La La Land was accidentally announced as the winner instead of Moonlight!

Pulling a Harvey

During the commotion of accidentally announcing the wrong winner for Best Picture, Jimmy Kimmel made the perfect joke: “Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this.” Well played, Kimmel. Good for you for making a witty comment that wasn’t written by your writers!

This Dude’s Hair

Let’s face it, the acceptance speeches for anybody other than the actors and actresses are usually the parts we skip, but Alessandro Bertolazzi’s hair is just so furry (he looks like he stole an old Chewbacca’s toupée) that you almost have to listen to the speech just for that!

Lin-Manuel Killin’ It

On top of writing the Oscar-nominated song from Moana, Lin-Manuel Miranda opened its live performance with his singing style that made Hamilton such a smash hit. Though it was only for a mere 20 seconds, that’s all he needed to prove how innovative he is with his craft.

Katherine Johnson

In honor of the real-life woman that was among the trio of women portrayed in Best Picture nominee Hidden Figures, the three stars of the movie introduced Katherine Johnson out onto the stage. The audience rose to their feet to honor such a profoundly amazing woman.

Hollywood Discrimination

During Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue, he made an indirect swipe at the president’s policies and turned it into a funny comment, saying: “We don’t discriminate against people (in Hollywood) based on what countries they come from, we discriminate against them based on their age and weight”.

Damon Gets Played Offstage

In the spirit of the ongoing rivalry between Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon, Kimmel used several opportunities to undermine the famed actor. When he and Ben Affleck went onstage to present an Oscar, the pair were announced as “Ben Affleck and guest.” Damon then found himself being played offstage by a Kimmel-conducted orchestra every time he opened his mouth!

Parents Supporting Actors

Among Jimmy Kimmel’s many jokes of the evening was his segue from his opening monologue to the first category of Best Supporting Actor, something he said parents are still doing: supporting actors.

Raining Candy

Perhaps one of the reasons that people are so uptight during the Oscars is because they haven’t eaten in over a week in an effort to fit into those skin-tight wetsuits they call dresses. Jimmy Kimmel knew the answer to combat that grumpiness: candy parachuted from the ceiling!

In Memoriam

Even if you’re unfamiliar with most of the people, the In Memoriam section of the awards can still be a melancholy experience. This year, however, we had some major losses; including Gene Wilder, Prince, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carrie Fisher. The tribute was accompanied by Sara Bareilles singing “Both Sides Now”.

Mean Tweets

Straight from Jimmy Kimmel Live, several celebrities read off some rather unsavory tweets about themselves. Some took them well, and some (namely Robert DeNiro) used certain expletives to surmise their feelings.

Thanks To Mom

During his acceptance speech for Best Sound Mixing, Kevin O’Connell took the opportunity to thank his mother who, he said, got him a job in sound 39 years ago. When he asked how he could thank her, she told him to work hard and win an Oscar and thank her then in front of the whole world.

That Vagrant Who Looked Like Casey Affleck

Even something as prestigious as the Oscars isn’t enough to make some people shave. Casey Affleck sported the homeless guy look for the evening, complete with a scraggly beard and moppy hair. Kimmel even called him out to the audience, saying “that isn’t a vagrant, that’s Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck!”

Over Enthusiasm

During the acceptance speech for Best Original Song, songwriter Benj Pasek freaked out just a bit and shared his joy with everyone. He dedicated his Oscar to “all the kids who sing in the rain and all of the moms who let them.”

Mahershala Ali’s Heartfelt Speech

Among the most from-the-heart speeches of the night, Mahershala Ali’s speech for his role in Moonlight focused on his appreciation for his teachers and professors who forced him to think of himself as a servant to the characters. He also recognized his wife for being such a soldier during her pregnancy.

Kimmel’s Words of Advice

Among his more indirect comments aimed towards president Trump, Jimmy Kimmel shared some sincere advice with those in attendance: “. . .if every one of you took a minute to reach out to one person you disagree with and have a positive, considerate conversation. . . as Americans, we would all make America great again. It starts with us.”
