Joe and Amy Alton, aka Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy of DoomAndBloom.net, have updated and expanded their original handbook on survival medicine. Their first book is The Doom and Bloom(tm) Survival Medicine Handbook. The new book is The Survival Medicine Handbook: A guide for when help is NOT on the way.

This new edition is bigger and better. It could save your life. And it tastes great.

Just kidding about that last part. You wouldn’t want to take a bite out of the cover or lick the pages, but it most definitely deserves a place in your survival library.

Who are Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy?

In case you’re not familiar with them, Joe Alton is an MD and his wife Amy is an Advanced Registered Nurse practicioner and midwife. Their Web site has hundreds of helpful medical articles. You may have seen a few reproduced here on occasion. They’re also contributors to “Survivalist,” “Backwoods Home Magazine” and other magazines related to survival and homesteading.

You can access their weekly podcasts from their site as well. Plus, they have a number of videos on YouTube. Look there for “DrBonesPodcast.”

If you’ve listened to their shows, you know they have a lot of fun while discussing serious medical and preparedness issues. And they always make great guests on DestinySurvival Radio. So I interviewed them for yesterday’s show to talk about their updated book.

Why the new book?

The mindset behind both of their books is to provide you and me with medical knowledge to use when no doctor is available. It’s likely in a disaster or other survival situation that medical help isn’t going to be coming. Or at least it won’t be nearly as readily available as it is to us today.

Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy also desire to share their knowledge in plain, understandable English. In a tight spot, you don’t want to be forced to ponder medical jargon.

Furthermore, because the preparedness community is so important to them, they’ve made painstaking efforts to self publish their book to maintain full control of its content. Don’t expect to see a Kindle version though because in a disaster, you’ll need the reliability of a hard copy book.

What’s different?

Of course, the new book has more pages with more info. There are also numerous additional illustrations. The content is not changed much from the first book, except more subjects are covered. And a couple of revisions were made because products mentioned in the first book are no longer available. Also, info on snake bites has been updated.

Major sections cover…

Principles of Medical Preparedness

Becoming a Medical Resource

Hygiene and Sanitation

Infections

Environmental Factors

Injuries

Chronic Medical Problems

OtherImportant Medical Issues

Medications

There’s a reference section, glossary of medical terminology and a helpful index.

Upwards of 150 pages were added for this second edition. New and expanded subjects include…

Mass casualty events

Medicinal gardening

Natural methods of pain relief

Sleep deprivation

Radiation sickness and biological warfare

Antibiotics, antivirals and antifungals

And more

Why mention herbs and natural remedies?

Joe and Amy believe in integrated medicine because they want to use all the medical related tools they can.

Why read it now?–This isn’t just a reference book for times of trouble. While the first part of the book lays down principles and philosophy, Joe and Amy have emphasized prevention throughout the book. Besides, what will you do if you can’t access good medical care because you’re out of a job or care has been rationed?

What’s the response to the book?

Their first book was a top seller on Amazon, and The Survival Medicine Handbook is doing even better. Joe and Amy have obviously tapped into a real need.

They’re very open to questions and concerns from readers. Reader input had a great deal to do with the making of this second book.

What else?

We talked about much more. For example. should we change our perspective about adequate medical care and the reality of death? What’s the difference between a clean and sterile environment?

It’s not possible for me to cover all we discussed, so I hope you’ll take time to listen to my interview with Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy on DestinySurvival Radio for July 18, 2013. Check out their site at www.DoomAndBloom.net. Dr. They also sell a variety of medical kits and supplies for you, too.
