All About The Business Of Studying

There are truly many different colleges and universities in the United States. One could even say that choosing the right institution of higher learning for an average American teenager is a sweet torment. After all, U.S. universities are notorious for their student life and constant partying. However, that’s only one side of the coin, since there are plenty of schools that are all about the academics. This is certainly true of Johns Hopkins University. With more than 5,100 graduates, Johns Hopkins is a mid-sized school where students primarily focus on their studies, rather than frat and sorority parties.

Nevertheless, to say that there is no social life at this school would be untrue. What’s more, it is very important; but Johns Hopkins is mainly a serious school for serious students. There is much less party time at the school than there is library time. In other words – for a student looking to enroll in a school with Division I sports and an active and large party scene, Johns Hopkins would not be a good choice. On the other hand, for someone looking to focus on their studies and sharpen their mind, this university is almost ideal.

Getting Started

Commonly referred to as simply Hopkins, JHU and Johns Hopkins, the University was founded in 1876 and was named after (you’ve guessed it) Johns Hopkins, a philanthropist, abolitionist, entrepreneur and the university’s first benefactor. Classified as a private research university, it is situated in Baltimore, Maryland. The establishment of Johns Hopkins Hospital was financed with nearly half of Hopkins’ $7 million bequest. At the time, this was the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the United States. Another significant figure in the history of this institution is Daniel Coit Gilman, the University’s first president. Inaugurated on February 22, 1876, Gilman integrated research and teaching and eventually led the university to revolutionize higher education in the United States.

Although it boasts international centers in Singapore, China and Italy, in the U.S., Johns Hopkins is organized into ten divisions on campuses in Washington D.C. and Maryland. East Baltimore is where the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the nursing school and medical school are located. Also in Baltimore are the university’s two undergraduate divisions, the Whiting School of Engineering and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Finally, Johns Hopkins also encompasses various other facilities, including the Carey Business School, the education school, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Peabody Institute etc.

An Appealing Environment

Johns Hopkins is especially well known for work in medicine and the sciences, and has been ever since its founding in 1876. The school is a national research leader, which comes as no surprise, given the fact that it was established as a university dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge on all fronts. Having produced an extensive array of various academic awards winners, not to mention 36 Nobel Prize winners, the University has managed to attract a particularly distinguished faculty.

It can be said without a doubt that some of the world’s most accomplished students are drawn to Johns Hopkins precisely because the academic environment is one of the most challenging of any school in the country.

Providing the option to complement education with numerous opportunities to be involved in research projects and community service, Hopkins is a truly serious school for only the most dedicated of students. Speaking of students, it is important to mention that, at Johns Hopkins, they tend to be more competitive versus their own high standards rather than one another. Students concentrate on their studies and are generally happy to cooperate with one another, especially if assistance is requested by a fellow student.

Something For Every Field Of Interest

Over the years, it is the sciences and premed programs where Johns Hopkins’ reputation was strongest. The university has managed to evolve to a point where it is now offering top-ranked programs in engineering, social sciences and the humanities, as well. A more diverse set of well-rounded students with a wider variety of interests and outlooks than ever before have been attracted because of the increasing availability of high quality academic programs in many areas of study. This is mainly thanks to the generous financial aid. Therefore, compared to the past, Johns Hopkins today is much more fun to attend. It can be said that the norm accepted by Johns Hopkins students at the moment is working hard and playing hard, combined with having a reasonably good social life.

A truly outstanding academic environment is what the resources of Johns Hopkins are capable of offering to students. On the main Homewood Campus, as aforementioned, there are two undergraduate divisions. The smaller one is the Whiting School of Engineering. It offers options in nearly 30 different fields of study. On the other hand, the larger Krieger School of Arts and Sciences boasts 60 different undergraduate degrees. Combined, a truly wide array of graduate level programs is offered by these two schools. Of course, one must not forget the leading music conservatory run by Johns Hopkins independently from the other two aforementioned schools – the Peabody Institute. Not far from the downtown Inner Harbor area of Baltimore, the Peabody Institute is located in its own historic building in the Mount Vernon neighborhood.

Johns Hopkins University – Where Grades Are Earned, Not Given

There is no such thing as a core curriculum at Johns Hopkins. On the other hand, a there is a rather flexible system of Distribution Requirements at the school. The implementation of Johns Hopkins Distribution Requirements, which provide students the flexibility to experiment with their choice of academic interests and classes, is highly complemented by the university’s students. In order to meet graduation requirements, students are required to earn a minimum of 30 credits in courses from areas outside their major. Writing intensive courses must also be taken, which carry twelve credits, whereas there are separate requirements for individual majors.

Students at Johns Hopkins University must be ready to dedicate themselves to rigorous study and academic achievement. A strong academic work ethic is mandatory at this school, since a grade is determined on a curve. In other words – the grade inflation found at many other schools is not the norm here. All in all, at Johns Hopkins University a top grade truly has to be earned.
