Have a simple background

Pick the simple and plain background that will suits and doesn’t have any distraction to your subject. It should help the subject to improve and enhance more. It should be contrast with or harmonizes with your subject. The color of the background should not be the same with the color of the subject because it not seems good to see both light colors combine as well as dark ones. Choosing your background has an effect in your photography results so better choose a plain one. It could be a creative kind of background as long as it doesn’t have any distraction to the subject.

Shake-free shot



In order to have a natural look for the food, you need to be shake-free. Long exposures are presented in low-light situations such as restaurants and kitchens. It can be register easily to any movement of camera. For easy taking shake-free shots, use tripod whenever as possible. If you do not have a tripod, try to make yourself a string tripod or place your camera at the back of the chair or at the table as long as it can help you to avoid shaking.

Proper lighting

Use more natural light as long as possible such as sunlight. The more natural light you use, the more fresh it looks like and the more it can be good in the eyes of your audience. Make sure that you do not use any flash in your camera so you can avoid ruining the beautiful photo. If you can’t have a natural light, then don’t try to use your flash. Set the photoshoots always on daytime so you can have a natural light. Flash photography is not recommended for sensible things such as foods.

Color Balancing



Balancing your color is needed especially when there is no natural light exist in that time. It is necessary because without it and the use of natural light, it can make the food terrible. For a quick tip, adjust the white balance in your camera.

Have the props

Table appointments such as dinnerware, flatware, and beverage ware and linens are used as extras in the dish presented. Consider one or two elements in the photo such as napkin, a glass of champagne, juice, dips, etc. As an additional, it doesn’t need to have a lot of props to enhance the photo. Too much props can distract the focus in the food. These extras are used to help the photo of the food more appealing to the eyes and ultimately make the food more interesting. It can be place in the foreground or can also be place at the background.

Work quickly

You should work swiftly in having food photography. The faster you take pictures of the food, the fresher it will result. The more time you take shots, the less fresh it will result. Especially to the cold foods as it don’t seems good when it absorbs warmth.

Big additional from the added small details

Add details. Give a little charming to the food which will enhance the appearance of the food to become more delicious or appealing to the eyes. Add an additional colorful garnish to the dish such as orange peel, lime, chopped cilantro, fried garlic, etc. Sauces can be also an additional by giving a drizzle of it to the dish. The use of dinnerware such salad plates and dinner plate as well as beverage ware such as sherbet glass, champagne glass and cordial also help to improve the look of the dish. Organize plating of the dish also a kind of help to improve.

Preparation of the food

Taking picture during the preparation also adds an interesting idea about the photo. People will have an idea of how the food done. Also capturing the preparation time of the food can tells the story itself.

Suited angles

Try to capture photos in any angles. Roam around the dish. Top view, Left view, right view, side view and any kind of view. But most of the photographers say that close up are always the best in food photographing. Don’t be afraid to capture multiple shots of it while roaming the whole dish. Keep snapping until you get the best shot. This will help you to have your choices in having the best picture where you emphasizes the natural beauty of the food.

Allow the natural spill of the food

Having a little bit of mess in the plating of the dish is not bad as what you think. It gives a movement or life for the dish you photograph. Sometimes plating the dishes normally gives boring. So in case the spills are around, do not fix it instead make it part of the photograph.
